The 2024 presidential election will be the first one since AI hit the mainstream.

WE. ARE. NOT. READY.

Here's how I think it's going to play out 🧵

For starters, I expect a ton of AI-generated content on both candidates to flood the internet.

Some will be created by US citizens, some will be created by foreign adversaries, and some will be created by the parties themselves:

Because the mainstream media is always in a rush to publish news, a lot of fake AI content is going to be accidentally amplified.

Reporters at "blue chip" media outlets will publish pieces that aren't factually correct.

Their corrections will then be too little, too late.

I also expect social media to become even more chaotic next election cycle

You thought it was bad in previous elections... What happens when people can create thousands of bot accounts that post content that feels real?

This is why @elonmusk's Twitter blue strategy is important

Both political parties are likely going to start incorporating AI tools heavily into their campaign strategies.

Expect to see political ads and email campaigns written by ChatGPT.

I also expect voice to play a big role. Imagine a "personalized" voicemail from Biden, Trump, etc.

The AI tools will also be used to conduct social sentiment analysis, as well as to improve polling.

Polling has been pretty inaccurate in recent elections, but I suspect with new AI tools, it will be easier to separate the signal from the noise.

Lastly, I expect the AI issue to become an increasingly political topic.

Eventually the parties are going to fall on opposite sides. We saw it with crypto and it's going to happen with AI.

Once this happens, I worry at least 1 candidate will promise to crack down hard on AI.

I don't like to be a fear monger, but I fear we are on a scary trajectory where AI will be becoming insanely good right as the election goes down.

For this reason, it's difficult not to imagine it playing a major role in who gets elected next election...

The biggest risk here is that AI turns into a scapegoat the way Facebook did during the 2016 election.

If that were to happen, it could severely hamper AI development in the country moving forward.

AI and the 2024 Presidential Election

The AI wars are getting serious:

Today the UK government announced that they are developing their own sovereign AI model.

Here's what this means for the future of AI 🧵

Earlier today it was reported that the UK government was launching a 'Foundational Model Taskforce'.

The group would be receiving £100 million (or $124.5 million) in funding.

Their mission is clear: Create an AI model that is globally competitive.

In some ways this was an inevitable announcement:

-The UK clearly differs from the rest of Europe in its receptiveness to AI (some EU countries have been outright hostile)

-It also signals that the UK does not want to make itself reliant on American companies (like OpenAI)

I think there's a very important trend developing here.

It's clear that every country wants to have control over their own AI model(s) in the future.

This suggests that the future of AI could look very different than that of the open internet (which almost all countries share)

This also comes at a time when other companies are trying to wall off their own datasets to build their own models.

Twitter, Reddit, Stack Overflow, all announced their intentions to start charging for training data this month.

Elon went as far as threatening to sue Microsoft

Now companies will also have to contend with the rules of different countries.

If a Tweet comes from a UK-based user, who has the right to train on that data?

Does it belong to Twitter? The UK government? Or both?

There will also be implications for users in the long term.

Will certain models only be allowed in certain countries?

Will you need to use a VPN to access your favorite model?

All possibilities worth exploring.

Lastly, it's worth continuing to mention that it doesn't have to be this way.

There are projects trying to combine crypto & AI to create AI models that are open source and anyone can access.

Is this the antidote to the increasingly segmented future we are heading towards?

UK to Develop Sovereign AI Model

Substack is in trouble.

Despite it's cultural impact, the business is a dead man walking...

@beehiiv is about to take its throne. Let me explain why 🧵

Before we start, I want to recognize that Substack has made a positive impact on media:

-They disrupted the mainstream media's monopoly by allowing independent writers to go direct

- They shifted us towards a more open internet, by letting writers keep their subscribers' emails

However, their business model was flawed from the start.

Similar to @Medium, they took on a bunch of venture capital to scale their business ($82M in total)

For a while, this papered over the holes in the business. But those issues are finally starting to show...

For starters, Substack is hemorrhaging money.

According to their 2021 income statement, they lost $22M.

(I expect those losses have only accelerated as they have scaled)

Looking closer at the financials, I see 2 concerning line items:

1) They only did $12M in revenue in 2021 (this is literal 🥜's).

To put it into perspective, individual newsletters like @MorningBrew did $46M in revenue that same year alone.

2) The $16.6M in partnership expenses

These likely went to writers to convince them to move to Substack. The only problem?

There's nothing stopping those writers from moving off the platform with a few button clicks

(That's the double edge sword of letting writers own emails)

So you have a business that is burning cash, with no path towards profitability.

To make matters worse, we have entered a terrible fundraising environment.

Which means that Substack can't raise the capital it needs to continue to burn cash and extend its runway...

This is why you've seen Substack making some moves that reek of desperation:

1) $2M community fundraising round:

IMO, this is taking advantage of their brand reputation. I am skeptical that anyone investing in this will see a positive ROI.

2) Their latest hail mary is a Twitter competitor.

For all the sh*t-talking people do about Twitter, it actually has extremely powerful network lock-in effects.

Just ask Mastadon how their plan to take Twitters' users is going...

While many members of the mainstream media are glad to see Substack struggling, I actually think this distribution model will work

It just needs a different business model

Enter @beehiiv, which I believe will be the most influential media platform of the next decade

I moved my newsletters from Substack to Beehiiv earlier this year, when I realized that Beehiiv's product was 10x better

A few examples:

-Extremely rich analytics suite (that goes way deeper than Substack)
-Native referral program
-Better text editor w/ more content types

What's crazy is that Beehiiv has launched all of these features in less than 2 years!

And it makes sense that this team knows how to build a better newsletter platform

After all, their founder @denk_tweets was one of the first hires at Morning Brew. He has first-hand experience

But it's not just Beehiiv's product that is superior... it's their business model

They've raised $4.2M to date from big media names like @businessbarista, @ShaanVP, @profgalloway & @Codie_Sanchez

IMO, while Substack helped create media disruption, their business is a 0% interest-rate phenomena.

Meanwhile, Beehiiv is an almost entirely bootstrapped business with a sustainable model.

And because their product is superior, customers will keep paying.

In summary, while Substack is more culturally relevant now, the future belongs to Beehiiv

The Rise of Beehiiv and the Decline of Substack

Imagine the following situation:

-You show up to court to fight a case
-On the table is a cell phone
-You pick it up
-You hear "I am your AI lawyer, please repeat everything I say to the judge"

This may sound dystopian, but it will be someone's reality next month 🧵

This thread is going to dive into @donotpay, a company that uses AI to fight cases on behalf of its clients.

We've seen AI solve for a number of problems ranging from copywriting to art generation.

However, this might be one of the most important applications yet...

Let's start with the problem.

For the vast majority of people in America, the legal system is rigged against them.

A lawyer is often very expensive, which means those in the lower class are forced to receive punishments that would have been avoidable with money.

DoNotPay's founder @jbrowder1 states that the mission of the company is to democratize legal representation by making it free for those who can't afford it.

Here's how they plan to do it...

When a defendant arrives at court, they will receive a call from DoNotPay.

On the other end will be an AI chat bot.

This AI program will listen to the court arguments and create responses for the defendant in real time...

The defendant will listen to the responses through headphones and then repeat them to the judge.

The best part?

If the robot lawyer loses the case, DoNotPay will cover any fines 🤯

Sounds pretty cool, right?

Well, bringing this product to market will not be easy.

For starters, their tech isn't legal in most courtrooms, since many states require all parties to consent to recordings.

However, just because it isn't possible in all places today, doesn't mean it's not worth pursuing.

In fact, DoNotPay is using their AI bot to help a defendant fight a traffic ticket in court next month.

The first time this has ever been done!

DoNotPay is also effective for dealing with other use cases like customer service disputes or lowering bills.

They've already won over 2 million customer service disputes to date!

(If you got screwed by @SouthwestAir over the holidays, this could be a good option 😉)

Like many AI use cases, DoNotPay's model raises a lot of questions for the future:

-Should phones be allowed in all court rooms?
-Will the judges eventually be AI too?
-Will a human or code decide what is right or wrong?

In my opinion, I think this is definitely a path worth pursuing.

There's no denying the legal system is broken, and if leveraged correctly, AI may become the ultimate equalizer in the court room.

So the next time you're in court, don't call Saul... call an AI robot instead!

Why your next lawyer might not be human

Google did $282 Billion in revenue last year, yet their empire could be on the verge of collapse.

Here's the story of how @Microsoft is using AI to take down the king of search 🧵

Before we proceed any further, it's important to understand how Google makes money...

While their revenue lines have diversified somewhat over the years, the vast majority of revenue still comes from search ads.

They raked in $40B in search ad revenue last Q3 alone 🤯

Aside from generating tons of revenue, the search ads model is key because it has extremely strong margins.

Google is able to use the profits from its search business to invest in moonshot business lines like self-driving cars, which currently loses a lot of $.

Due to a variety of factors such as: proprietary algorithms, search infrastructure and brand, Google has been able to capture 90%+ of the search engine market share.

So what would it take to disrupt this paradigm?

A fundamental shift in the way people leverage search...

Microsoft is betting that AI will be that technology that fundamentally changes the way that people use search.

And to show how serious they are about this bet, they just announced that they are investing $10 BILLION in @OpenAI to lead the charge!

So how will AI change search?

Well tools like ChatGPT & DALL·E could help make the online search experience more effective for users by:

1) Offering more detailed responses

2) Generating eye-catching images

Let's consider some examples...

Imagine a YouTube creator wants to have an exciting thumbnail image for their latest video.

Today they could go to Google -> Images, however many of those images will be subject to copyright.

So what's the workaround?

Have DALL·E generate a brand new image from scratch.

Or take a student that needs to write an essay about the American Revolution.

Instead of asking Google for different facts and piecing them together, they can just have ChatGPT write an ENTIRE essay from scratch that is original and factually correct.

If Bing were to integrate these AI-driven features, it would represent a substantial improvement over the existing Google search experience.

And if Google were to begin bleeding market share, it could cause their entire empire to come crashing down

So is this the end of Google?

Well, not so fast.

It's important to remember the 2 most crucial things to succeed in AI:

1) Proprietary data sets
2) Large amounts of compute power

Google already has both of these in abundance.

Which means they may already have their own AI offering in the works.

There's also the fact that Microsoft needs to find a way to make up the $10 Billion investment.

As part of the deal they would receive 75% of OpenAI's profits until it recoups the initial investment.

And own 49% of the company afterwards...

However, OpenAI doesn't currently generate a lot of revenue.

They only did around $35 million in revenue in 2022.

And despite claims they will reach $1 billion in revenue in 2024, it's not exactly clear how they will get there.

Regardless of the current state of OpenAI, it would be unwise to bet against Satya and Microsoft.

Satya has repeatedly made big bets on emerging business lines that have paid off.

These include acquisitions like @linkedin, @Minecraft and @github...

The AI battles are just beginning and when they are done the entire digital economy may look completely different.

Let's see how Google responds to this initial strike by Microsoft...

The future of their company may depend on it.

How Microsoft is using AI to kill Google

Students using technology to cheat on essays is a tale as old as time.

However, some educators are so concerned with ChatGPT that they've banned it in schools!

That problem may already be old news

Here's the story of how a Princeton student is combating AI plagiarism with AI🧵

When @OpenAI released their language model ChatGPT-3 back in November, it was clear that this was a step-change technological improvement.

Naturally people began to think of new ways to apply this model.

Before long, the technology had made its way into the hands of students...

Students have long leveraged the internet/technology to get out of writing essays.

Whether it was using Sparknotes, changing text to white, or hiring people online, students will do literally ANYTHING to avoid writing 😂

And ChatGPT appears to be the best option ever.


With one simple prompt, students can have ChatGPT write entire essays.

These essays are grammatically & informationally correct, and ORIGINAL pieces of content.

This makes plagiarism much more difficult to detect since it's not a copy/paste from somewhere else on the internet.

Given the power of this tool, many educators took to social media to begin voicing their concerns.

The fear was so great, that the NYC public school system even went so far as to ban ChatGPT completely from their school networks and devices 🤯

But it appears that those fears might have been overblown, as Princeton student @edward_the6 believes he may already have a solution.

The best part is that he is combating AI-based plagiarism with an AI tool of his own called "ChatGPT Zero".

Here's how it works...

The app relies on 2 primary indicators to detect if a blurb was produced by ChatGPT:

1. "Perplexity": How complex is the text.
2. "Burstiness": What is the variation between sentences (i.e. short sentences alongside longer ones).

Both of these indicators hone in on aspects that are unique to the ways that humans write.

The human mind still tends to produce more naturally complex pieces than AI chat bots.

And they are also more prone to variations in their writing style, unlike a chat bot which is rigid.

The Beta is live for anyone to try and so far over 20,000 people have already tested it.

While Tian admits that the app is not foolproof, it still represents a step in the right direction to combat AI plagiarism.

I think there is an even more important takeaway from this story:

We should EMBRACE new technology not fight it.

As AI continues to improve, I am expecting a wave of hate and resistance to pop up, as has always been the case throughout history with new technologies.

This resistance dates back to the 19th century, when a group of English textile workers known as the 'Luddites,' went out and destroyed textile machinery.

They believed that this new technology was ruining their lives and that the only way forward was by eliminating it.

However, as we saw time after time, these technological breakthroughs led to NEW jobs & MORE prosperity for society in the long term.

While it may lead to short term disruption & discomfort, our natural reaction should be to leverage new technology like AI for good vs hating it.

The NYC public school system is acting like Luddites, whereas Edward Tian is acting like an innovator.

If I had to place bets for which approach will have more success in the future, I'm definitely betting on the latter!

Combating AI plagiarism with AI

While I would love for the pain to be over for the crypto industry, there are still a number of clouds on the horizon.

Here's a comprehensive list of the potential risks you should be keeping an eye on.

1) @DCGco

@BarrySilbert has built DCG into a crypto empire that's been around since 2015.

Their holding companies include @GenesisTrading, @Grayscale and @CoinDesk.

Cracks have already begun to form with Genesis considering bankruptcy + firing 30% of their workforce.

Right now there's a multi-billion $ hole in Genesis' balance sheet from the crypto contagion.

How that hole is handled could have a massive impact on the industry.

Barry is the largest holder of BTC, if he has to market sell any of it, it could pull the markets down further.

2) @silvergatebank

Silvergate is the crypto-focused bank that connects all of the top crypto CeFi players.

They run the Silvergate Exchange Network, which is crucial to helping move $ around the crypto ecosystem...

Let's just say things aren't looking good for Silvergate:

-Stock down 91%
-$8 billion in withdrawals in the final months of 2022
-Cut 40% of their workforce

If Silvergate goes under, it's unclear who will step in to fill their role.

3) @justinsuntron projects

Justin Sun is one of the crypto OGs that has somehow managed to avoid the main character arc

He launched Tron which is in the top 20 by market cap, has a ~$1B stablecoin $USDD and 'advisor' to @HuobiGlobal

This combo has proved dangerous historically

There's a few ways things could go wrong:

-$USDD de-pegs (hasn't been at $1 since Oct.)
-Troubles at Huobi (20% of staff just laid off)
-Funny business with how Justin was using $TRON and/or $USDD.

i.e. Did he use it as collateral in areas he shouldn't have...

There's also the questionable relationship between Justin, @cz_binance, and @tether.

Not enough characters, but consider that Justin has been moving $100s of millions in and out of Binance in recent weeks.

4) @cz_binance and @binance

Speaking of Binance, they've grown even stronger in the wake of the FTX fallout.

They are responsible for 10X the volume of the next largest exchange & many are starting to label them as "too big to fail"

But is this who we want leading our space? Consider:

-CZ has operated from off-shore locations for years (his location is basically unknown)
-Binance is currently under U.S. investigation
-They launched/run the 3rd largest blockchain @BNBCHAIN while pretending it's decentralized

The risk here would be that Binance committed any type of fraud similar to FTX. Such as:

-Commingling customer deposits from different GEOs, market makers, or hedge funds
-Using $BNB or $BUSD as vaporware collateral
-U.S. brings down the hammer super hard on them

5) @Tether_to

Tether remains the largest stablecoin in the world with a market cap of $66B.

It remains a safe harbor for many investors during crypto winters & is deeply integrated into DeFi ecosystems...

However, Tether has a history of not operating from a point of transparency.

For a very long time, it was widely believed that Tether wasn't backing their reserves 1:1.

Tether also has ties to Alameda/FTX & shady characters like Dan Friedberg (just google him + Tether)

The scariest part of all these looming risks is that one or more of them are likely connected to one another. Which would only multiply the contagion if another goes down.

Almost all of the major CeFi players took irresponsible amounts of risk during this last cycle...

Important point:

Notice what I'm NOT concerned about for the future...decentralized protocols & apps

Bitcoin continues to mine blocks, developers continue to launch exciting new use cases

And yet, the irresponsibility of CeFi players risks a negative short term impact on them


Obligatory final point here:

It's time to return to crypto fundamentals. NOT your keys, NOT your coins.

Get off exchanges, manage personal risk and stay focused on the long term vision.

This industry rewards those who do this, and ruthlessly punishes those who don't.

Looming risks in crypto

Just watched the @LoganPaul response video to @coffeebreak_YT about #CryptoZoo

Drama aside, I think this saga can teach us a lot about the future of the internet.

If you care about: Creators, Web3 Social or Crypto this thread is for you 🧵

Let me begin by stating that I am a viewer of both of these creators.

I watch every episode of Coffeezilla, and many episodes of Impaulsive.

As someone building a new media platform, I have respect for both of them for different things...

Regardless of your views on him, there's no denying that Logan Paul is one of THE most successful content creators of the modern era

From starting with Vine & YouTube, to working with the @WWE & launching his own products, Logan has been a trailblazer

He is @MrBeast level

Given his tendency to act like a Maverick (which he has made part of his brand), it's not surprising he was one of the first creators to lean into crypto.

He was one of the first to buy NFTs like @cryptopunksnfts, he joined @BitClout early & has even launched a DAO.

The willingness to experiment and constantly push the boundaries is what has gotten Logan this far, but has also been his downfall numerous times.

His infamous Japan suicide video was a classic example of when he pushed too far, which he has admitted was a big mistake.

Unfortunately it looks like his experiment with @CryptoZooCo might be another example of him taking things too far.

As a TL;DR, Logan tried to launch an NFT collection last year that would allow people to breed digital eggs & eventually hatch them for use in a metaverse game...

However, after many months of silence, it appeared as if the project had completely died off, making it a rug pull for all intents and purposes.

That was until Coffeezilla decided to publish a video series on it...

In the series of videos, we have since learned that there were major problems internally at CryptoZoo ranging from rogue developers to internal pump & dump schemes.

I recommend watching the Coffeezilla series (it's entertaining stuff), but the question now is what comes next?

Given the amount of people that lost money on this project & the attention it has gotten in the news, there will certainly be law suits (Logan said he was suing Coffeezilla) & brand implications for everyone involved.

But I'm more concerned with the bigger picture...

I think the thing that personally disappointed me the most about this entire saga, was that Logan Paul was the EXACT type of creator that should be able to leverage Web3/crypto for good.

He has the resources to build strong teams (look at Prime) & audience to drive attention.

However, I believe that the current incentive mechanisms in crypto are warped, which is why we saw him & many other creators f*ck up.

Because Logan raised the money up front, he wasn't incentivized to fix the situation & holders/investors got hurt as a result...

This is very different from a business like his Prime drink line, in which he has to actually develop the product & scale operations before he makes a single $.

Which is why he likely focused on that and ignored CryptoZoo, he didn't see the incentive.

To put it another way; if a distributor for Prime were to f*ck him over or steal money from the project, he wouldn't just give up on the Prime drink line

He would use his resources to fix it, because he has conviction he could eventually make the $ back, he wouldn't just drop it

This is why I believe he is (rightfully) taking a lot of heat for CryptoZoo.

He leveraged his brand & massive audience to sell people on a digital product.

They bought it in advance and all available evidence suggested he wasn't going to deliver.

Now onto the bigger picture...

I have STRONG conviction that Web3 Social will be the ultimate equalizer for creators on the internet.

But in order to get there, creators need to learn from Logan's situation.

Creators must be up front with setting expectations & MUST execute on what is promised.

Furthermore, the PMs, designers & engineering folks in Web3 need to build better platforms for creators.

At the end of the day people like Logan are creators, not tech savants.

If they are the ones building the underlying platform/infrastructure, they will likely fail...

Instead, we need developers building dApps for creators on protocols like @LensProtocol, @desoprotocol, @farcaster_xyz, etc.

And introducing new primitives & use cases for allowing creators to appropriately monetize their audience without f*cking them over.

This is where I would like to see @coffeebreak_YT lean in more and support Web3 social platforms, instead of bowing to the tech monopolies like YouTube

He's been hard on apps like Bitclout in the past, but I hope he looks a level deeper & see the actual potential behind the tech

A good place to start might be with @garyvee, who I think overall has done a good job of trying to consistently deliver value for his holders, building a community & being a defender of crypto.

In summary this entire situation is a sad one.

Logan had a tremendous opportunity to showcase how creators can properly leverage crypto, but blew it.

Whether this was through malintent, incompetence or because the current incentive mechanisms of crypto is worth reflecting on.

This problem is worth solving, because creators have been taken advantage of by central tech platforms for too long.

The only winner in this entire saga won't be Logan/Coffeezilla, or the fans or the CryptoZoo holders. No, it will be the same winner as always...

What the CryptoZoo saga can teach us about the future of creators, crypto, and the internet.

In 2023 we're building @web3pills into a Web3 media behemoth.

Before starting any project, it's important to begin with WHY.

For me there were 2 levels for this:

The first was that I have built complete conviction in Web3 and am here for the long haul.

I didn't have this conviction back in 2017 when people like my roommates @nneverlander and @ivanbogatyy were going full time.

However, after years of cutting my teeth in big tech + building a financial base, I am committed to staying until I have given it my all.

However, once I made this decision, I was left with another question... WHAT should I build?

This is a complicated question because it is really hard to find product-market fit in crypto right now.

To properly contextualize this point, let's look at the facts...

Only a small group of companies in crypto like @coinbase & @opensea have found any semblance of product-market fit

The situation is even more bleak when you go to the decentralized space where only a few protocols & dApps have traction

(@Uniswap still only averages ~15K DAUs)

I have confidence that this situation will improve over time; and I have massive respect for the teams that are in the arena trying to crack this code.

But I’ve decided that the typical protocol or dApp path isn’t right for me at this time.

For the past few months I’d been spinning my wheels, until I realized that the answer had been in front of me all along...

While many dApps still do not have strong product-market fit, many crypto media projects DO have it.

Outlets like @Coindesk, @DefiantNews, and @BanklessHQ have content being consumed by hundreds of thousands of people EVERY SINGLE DAY.

Once I began viewing content/media through this lens, it made it increasingly clear to me that this was the right path to pursue.


Obviously there’s a number of existing Web3 media platforms already out there

While I’m an extremely competitive person, I draw a lot of inspiration from them

Seeing the Bankless guys grow their platform or how Milk Road went from 0 to 250,000+ followers in a year is inspiring


However, I believe I have a strategy that is differentiated and will ultimately allow Web3 Pills to one day become THE premier source of crypto media and news in the future.

Without revealing too much about the strategy there are a few core tenants I will be leaning into:


1) Cover the full breadth of Web3:

While it’s important that some platforms have narrowed in on specific segments of Web3 such as the Metaverse, NFTs or token trading, I want people to be able to find content on ALL of these topics when they come to the Web3 Pills platform.


2) No Blockchain Maximalism:

A few months ago, I wrote an Op-ed for Coindesk about my goal to put an end to maximalism in crypto.

The reality is that our industry is too nascent for us to be turning on each other now.

3) Actually leverage Web3 tech: Long term, we will use the power of Web3, to help grow our platform. Web3 offers new ways to monetize content, run decentralized governance & store/distribute media.

For instance, I published my blog post on-chain with Mirror.

I titled this article why ‘I’m’ building a Web3 media platform, but in reality this will be a team effort.

There is only so much impact I can make on my own. That’s the difference between being a lone content creator vs a full-scale media platform.

While I will leverage my online presence to drive growth for the platform, ultimately we are building a community of creators

I’ve already brought on all stars like @buxdabomb, @thinkgrowcrypto & @AhmadloneSuhail to create content

I plan to hire dozens more creators in 2023

We are also partnering with other groups like @MarioNawfal's
Crypto @RoundtableSpace, which offers a great entry point for those just getting their feet wet in crypto.

In conclusion, while our industry still faces significant headwinds, I am confident that we are building the future of the internet together.
