Dependiendo de la necesidad de calidad y la probabilidad de que el código evolucione en el futuro, se debería usar más o menos
Cuando controlas TDD, te das cuenta de que no te hace ir más lento si el objetivo es poner código de alta calidad en Producción y que además vas a estar modificando a corto o medio plazo
El tiempo invertido en crear esos tests, que guían tu desarrollo, es tiempo que usas en diseñar. En pensar en nombres, contratos, acoplamiento y cohesión.
Esos tests te aportan también un entorno donde poder refactorizar el código de forma segura. Todas las veces necesarias hasta alcanzar la calidad deseada en código y diseño
Y también, esos tests te aportan una red de seguridad automática para detectar cuando un cambio en el código rompe una funcionalidad.
Y una documentación confiable y ejecutable para cualquier desarrollador.
Pero hay situaciones donde no se necesita alcanzar la máxima calidad o donde no vas a tener que evolucionar el código a menudo.
Situaciones como Spikes, PoC, Prototipos o Programas pequeños, sencillos y no críticos.
Son situaciones donde puedes usar TDD sólo un poco o no usarlo
También puede ocurrir que no controles TDD aún.
Aprender TDD requiere primero saber Diseño, Refactoring y Programar tests.
Y luego, desarrollar la disciplina y habilidad para avanzar en pasos pequeños, elegir el siguiente test, crear un código mínimo y evolucionar con refactor
Si aún no controlas TDD, no te fuerces a usarlo todo el rato.
No te va a dar el resultado esperado y te vas a frustrar.
Úsalo sólo un poco. Si es con ayuda, mejor. Puedes crear un primer test o dos y ya está.
Experimenta e irás aprendiendo poco a poco
TDD no deja de ser una herramienta. Como muchas otras.
Somos nosotros, como devs, los que debemos aprender cómo sacarle partido. Cuándo usarlo y cúando no.
Y si no lo usas nunca, no pasa nada. La mayoría del software que hay en Producción fue creado sin usar TDD
