What is the Symbiocene?

It is a future geological epoch where humanity realizes its rightful place as a Keystone Species and ushers in a new era of planetary flourishing.

It emerges out of a period of volatility and chaos from the Anthropocene.

We are currently living through the age of the Anthropocene:

An epoch characterized by the detrimental human impact on Earth's ecosystems leading to climate change & collapse of living systems.

We are coming to the end of this era. 

AI will accelerate its conclusion.

The advent of AGI alongside the impacts of climate change will catalyze a rapid, volatile age out of which The Symbiocene will emerge...

This will be an era where humans live in harmony with nature AS nature, fostering ecological balance & symbiosis with all living beings.

Looking backward, the Anthropocene emerged out of the dominant Western Colonial Mindset that is rooted in the core belief that humans are separate from nature and are meant to be dominions over life.

The extractive anthropocentric society is ripples out from this core idea.

The Symbiocene integrates the Kinship Worldview with modern science and emerging technology under a new story of progress.

It is rooted in the belief that humans ARE nature & that life itself is inherently valuable.

It is the evolution of consciousness that recognizes the intrinsic value of all living beings.

Oddly enough, this appears to be a 'coming home' of the human story.

Indigenous communities have cultivated small-scale symbiotic societies for thousands of years that support this kinship worldview and understands humans as stewards of this intricate web of life to which we belong and depend upon to survive.

Today marks the first day of a 30-day book challenge alongside a community of writers led by @kellycwilde who wrote her book in a week-long sprint.

This is the stack of books I've been reading over the last nine months, with some new additions for the latest adventure!

To kick off the sprint, I booked myself a week-long nature hideaway 5-mins from a local beach here in Portugal, filled my fridge with organic food and cupboard with speciality coffee.

I laid out my week's microdose of mushrooms and got my daily workout routine in place.

I started my morning with hot water, lemon and celtic sea salt.

... went for a swim at the beach, did 25-minutes of calisthenics and then made myself a nice breakfast with a washed Ethiopian coffee.

Body. Mind. Heart.

I reflected upon my dreams from last night, which featured a family of wild boars—a recurring animal that has visited my dreams frequently over the last few months.

... cracked open Amitav Ghosh's "The Nutmeg Curse: Parables for A Planet in Crisis" and got to work!

I'm following an inspectional reading process described in Mortimer J. Adler's "How to Read A Book" to get a topographic overview of the book's key ideas, and identify areas to deep dive.

I've written a loose outline that guides my thinking and highlights areas of focus.

Every 25-50 minutes I take a break and do a set of calisthenics to keep my blood flowing and counteract the periods of stillness.

I allow my mind to rest in a state of 'diffuse thinking' where I can begin to synthesize ideas passively before re-engaging in focus.

Breaking up my day with calisthenics, dance and meditation has been a really important part of maintaining balance & maintaining the strength I cultivated during my sabbatical.

PURPOSE IS A STORY 📜✍🏻

I've come to realize that our life purpose is a story—it is a fictional narrative we experience through our thoughts, actions, and emotions. 

When we learn how to listen to our heart, we start to tell a story that better serves ourselves & our planet.

WITNESSING WETIKO 👺

Wetiko is a concept from Native American folklore that represents the colonial virus of the human mind that drives us to consume at all costs and to disconnect ourselves from the web of life.

Where does Wetiko show up in your current life story?

For me, Wetiko represented itself in a hidden set of motivations to accumulate wealth at the expense my core relationships—most importantly with the quiet voice of my highest self.

While I initially built a life that many would deem successful, I did this at great cost.

Learning how to listen to my inner voice amidst the turbulence of the pandemic taught me how to quiet my mind and tune into the wisdom of my body through breath work and embodied practices that cultivate flow states in nature.

This is now a central part of my identity.

As I began tapping into these practices I discovered an emerging field of heart intelligence pioneered by @HeartMathInst 

Their research shows the heart is actually an intelligent organ with its own central nervous system that produces a powerful electromagnetic field.

The heart and the brain are engaged in a continuous, two-way dialogue, where the heart provides 80% of the information TO the brain.

We can cultivate a flow state between the heart and brain to access this intelligence. It is known as "heart coherence."

The Quick Coherence Technique is a powerful three-part method for achieving heart coherence quickly. It's easy, anyone can do it.

1. Focus your attention on the area of your heart and breathe deeply
2. Activate a positive feeling
3. Sustain the positive feeling

In the same way that the mindfulness revolution sparked millions of people to cultivate a daily practice of guiding their awareness toward the contents of consciousness, there is a new heartfulness revolution to cultivate intuition, compassion and authentic connections.

The metacrisis requires an entirely new level of human coordination.

This requires a new mode of being that is rooted in abundance and trust rather than scarcity and fear. 

We need an entirely new way to relate to one another.

Technology isn't going to save the day.

Our hearts are the organs that allow us to relate from a more compassionate and connected place. 

This is essential to overcome the apparent obstacles we face as we look past our differences, our pains and learn how to work together.

By cultivating heart coherence as a daily practice we can begin to relate to ourselves and the world in a more compassionate and connected way.

We start to recognize the importance of the land and community we depend upon to survive and begin to properly value what matters.

Our job is to find our instrument and stay in tune.

The heart as an organ is our primary source of intuitive intelligence and can help us find the unique contributions that make us fully alive.

Heart Intelligence: Unveiling Purpose

When I was four years old, I toppled into a pool and nearly drowned.

Since then I've had a deep fear of drowning.

I overcame this fear by learning how to freedive down to 70 feet on just a single breath.

This experience opened up a gateway to a new kind of leadership.

My life has been a series of sprints, fueled by a cocktail of adrenaline and cortisol, pushing for success under deadlines.

But freediving invites an entirely different kind of performance.

Why is this so important for #ReFi?

Since the launch of @toucanprotocol in 2021 the #ReFi movement has been looking for institutional adoption of tokenized carbon, but we've been struggling for a clear use case that meets the needs of project developers & large banks.

After beginning with the vision of a 100% carbon-backed stablecoin, @RobinKlemens and his team at @kumo_earth dug deep and did months of extensive research interviewing institutional leaders across project developers and large investors.

They reached two key insights:

1. Project developers needed access to cold hard cash and had carbon assets to back

2. Investors needed to diversify their portfolio with increasing pressure from shareholders and regulators to invest in climate positive assets

4/

With incoming supply of carbon on hold, they spoke to dozens of leading project developers who were incredibly helpful and forthcoming about their financial challenges.

There was over $10B of latent carbon assets on their balance sheets that the market couldn't service! 🤯

Thanks to the infrastructure layer provided by folks like @ToucanProtocol, @solidworldhq and @thallo_io there was a clear foundation upon which @kumo_earth could build out a lending marketplace which would allow project developers to leverage their carbon assets for loans.

This use case of a project developer tokenizing their spot and forward carbon credits in order to realize their value in the form of a loan was an incredibly powerful concept, and it started gaining momentum on both sides of the market.

They also began gaining significant momentum with a number of large traditional finance players, including one tier one bank.

This seems to be a major opportunity for the #ReFi space to lean into the increasing appetite from institutional actors.

The folks at @kumo_earth ended up deploying an MVP at COP that leverages @solidworldhq's tokenized mangrove forwards, #CRISPM, to take out a loan in FIAT—not crypto.

This is the fascinating bit: The carbon is tokenized but the loan is settled in USD.

With the infrastructure layer of @solidworldhq we now have an app layer of @kumo_earth which could even service a marketplace like @senken_io  to allow project developers to gain immediate cash flows via a loan while waiting for their credits to sell on the market.

The collaboration opportunities emerging in the next wave of #ReFi are enormous...

I'm super excited to see the incoming capital flows financing mangroves via @solidworldhq and accessing liquidity for further project development via @kumo_earth.

I was left with a deepened well of compassion for those on the fringes and a newfound sensitivity for my own biases and blindspots.

I was deeply moved and inspired to hear the personal journey of someone who had overcome so many obstacles and had fought not only for her own seat at the table, but for all of life—and to have done all of this with compassion and integrity.

This is regeneration.
