Just a reminder that the FBI got involved very early:

On that call were also Daszak, Andersen, Gronvall, Baric, Inglesby, etc, plus Kathryn Brinsfield (then Senior Advisor, National Counterproliferation Centre, Office of the Director of National Intelligence).
The call was about the NASEM letter that really was nothing else than a Track II sermon.
The redaction of that letter scared Daszak, as he got a push-back in the presence of US intel, for trying to insert a statement about a natural origin.
This immediately spurred him into writing his Statement of Support, while hiding his role there.
He would then blame Andersen for alerting the White House about a possible non-natural origin, both through that NASEM push back and through the redaction of Proximal Origin.
Daszak was really furious that despite all his background firefighting, his grants got eventually suspended.
This resulted in the torpedoing of Proximal Origin at Nature and the 'anonymous' letter to John Cohen, that tried to damage Andersen, Holmes, Rambaut and Garry's reputations.
