Sanjay Sabha began airing on the official Sanjay Subrahmanyan YouTube channel in January 2021. Last month S03E01 was the 25th episode of the series. Firstly my thanks to all the patron members who joined, renewed every month, and kept it going.

The pandemic created a situation where performing arts went through a huge depression. Artists had to dig into their creative reserves to keep them going.

Digital offerings helped in many ways and artists came up with newer and newer ways of remaining fresh and engaged with their audience.

Sanjay Sabha concerts on my YouTube channel were my main go-to during this period. Just the experience of wearing your kutchery clothes, tuning the tambura, and going to a studio to sing a formal concert was such a rewarding experience. You members helped me keep going.

Over the last two years, the biggest takeaway has been the feedback from people who were not able to get out of their homes. Online concerts to a reasonable extent helped them to relive the live experience.

Of course, live concerts are back but Sanjay Sabha on the YouTube channel continues into its 3rd season. I have to give a big shout-out to Team Sanjay Sabha who have tirelessly worked to put this together.

The BM & C team with Bhargavii, Divya, Hari & Suresh set up, shoot, edit, and produce each episode meticulously. MT Aditya, Sabareesh, Sriram, and the audio team from Offbeat who ensure that the sound is in place and the music is sung, recorded, and heard right.

I just want to pause for a moment and say a big Thank You to 2022! After so much uncertainty over the last couple of years we slowly saw some normalcy return to our lives.

As a performing musician, getting on stage, singing concerts to live audiences is the biggest motivation to get up to every morning. It is a blessing to be able to do what you like the most and I continue to be grateful to all of you for your overwhelming support.

Live concerts returned to Carnatic Music and I was happy to sing as well as travel once again regularly. We also have been having a good run with Sanjay Sabha Live concerts in Chennai and elsewhere.

Lots of information and data has been gleaned from these ventures and we are looking forward to seeing where we can take this in 2023.

Online initiatives will continue with Sanjay Sabha Season 03 on YouTube. The first 2 seasons were mostly inhouse recorded concerts. We have experimented with a few "in-studio" concerts to record and stream as episodes for Season 03.

Singing during Navarathri started pretty early for me. From the time I began learning music, every Navarathri, I would do the rounds of neighbouring houses and sing for my sundal.

In a way it was a 'performance' and each year you wanted to hear someone come and say, "You have improved from last year!" Of course my useless attempts at violin playing also resulted in the knowledgeable aunty telling my mom,

"He is playing the same way - no improvement, doesn't he practice?"Navarathri has a long tradition of music concerts in Chennai and elsewhere. For a period in the late 90s and early 2000s I would sing concerts on almost all 9 days!

My personal favourite soon became the Navarathri Mandapam concert in Trivandrum.I still remember the first invitation I got from Prince Rama Varma to sing in the Mandapam.

It was a surreal experience to just go and sing there and soak in the musical atmosphere of all those greats that had performed there in the past. During my first decade I missed out on Mandapam concerts a few occasions because of foreign travel.

Then one day Prince Rama Varma quietly told me, go wherever you want but keep a date during Navarathri! To this date we have both been true to our words I should say! Last year was special in a very unique way. The festival happened without audience because of the pandemic.

I was honored by the presence of Prince Rama Varma himself sitting in front to make us feel so much more at home! It was a break from protocol for him, as the royal family usually listen to the concert from behind a window in a closed room adjoining the performance space.

Of course, Prince Rama Varma has broken quite a few protocols to successfully take the festival into the 21st century and kudos to him for doing so!

The other thing about Navarathri was the last day, Vijayadasami. The ritual of visiting Gurus was such a celebration. I loved visiting my teachers and spending time and seeking their blessings.

Later after both my grand aunt and Shri KSK had passed, I made it a point to visit Shri N Ramani and Shri Nagai Muralidharan, both of whom I had adopted as my Gurus.

I also met and started learning from SRD Vaidyanathan and every year we looked forward to the meeting on Vijayadasami.

Today I still look up Shri Nagai Muralidharan who has been a musical friend, mentor and Guru and every phone call or visit is filled with exchanges on ragams, kritis and musicians!

Very few festivals have resonated with me musically as Navarathri and I look forward to it once more this year in 2022!

Sanjay Sabha has completed 20 months of activity. We just uploaded the 20th concert on the YouTube channel and the upcoming Sanjay Sabha Live in Chennai will be our 10th such event.

Things are slowly limping back to normal over the last few months. We are travelling again, performing live and it is so wonderful to meet you all in person.

I am looking forward to touring Dubai and the US again in October and hopefully we will have a lovely December season in Chennai.

I am a live performer foremost & getting on stage and singing before an audience gives more pleasure than anything. At the same time I have enjoyed the process of getting before a camera and performing. Be it a concert, Short Notes, On that Note, Notations or just promos.

As we stand on the cusp of things opening up, I am excited that this twin pronged approach of reaching out to you all digitally and in-person will continue.

YouTube made it possible to offer Channel memberships. The response has been wonderful and has motivated us to keep going. Here are some key takeaways.

Sanjay Sabha Live lays emphasis on Rasika First. Empowering the listener was the priority. As Senthil, the Tamizh comedian said in a film "Information is wealth!". Publishing song lists in advance was intended to do just that.

I am happy to say that the feedback has been phenomenal. Concert attendees look forward to knowing what is on offer every time. At the same time it is an extension of my endeavor to reach listeners directly.

In those days live audiences increased when music was listened to on the radio, television and personal music systems. Today, I feel that audiences are able to relate to music in a very personal way after watching/listening online and it makes them want to attend concerts.

I never thought that a boomer like myself would attend a standup comedy show, until I started watching snippets online!

I am also understanding that the digital content and social media is bringing in newer and younger audiences to the live concerts.

It is so heart warming to see the number of people coming up and saying "This is my first Carnatic concert. I don't know Carnatic Music, but I know Sanjay Subrahmanyan!"

I was singing a concert at the Academy in Dec 1992, and I finished the concert with "Maname ganamum" in Abheri.

A senior music listener and connoisseur, who had introduced me to some exquisite Carnatic music over the years, came up to me and said "How dare you sing a film song at the Music Academy?" He followed it up by saying he wouldn't have minded it if I had sung it anywhere else!

I had no idea it was a film song! (Yes, MS Subbulakshmi has sung it in the Tamil film Savithri) I didn't argue or answer but the comment stayed with me.

It is interesting how people perceive music, places and form ideas about "what and how" something is to be done. What he meant was, the Music Academy was sacrosanct, and these songs were only 'allowed' elsewhere!

Of course, he was not a musician, had never sung a concert before an audience in his life, and that gave him the right to say whatever he wanted to me!

I was also slowly discovering ways of incorporating musical nuggets from other forms and genres into my concert singing. Usually it was an inside joke that I enjoyed with my accompanists, family and close friends.

However, listeners are clever and they know what is happening over time! They are however most forgiving and accepting unlike the odd snob that crops up here and there, like the one mentioned above.

I loved the opening line of 'Thuninthapin maname" from the film Devadas. It was classic Kalyani with a lovely Ghantasala twist. It was first pointed out by Madurai GS Mani in a lec dem on Carnatic Music and Cinema.

Sometimes when I finished an alapana of Kalyani I would quietly recall this phrase. The phrase also allows me to use, as a take off into a bit of Yaman. These are indulgences and are fun, enjoyable and fulfilling when you can pull them off!

Around the early 2000s I started using the phrase " sasasasa sasasasa" whenever I sang Chalanattai in a ragamalika swaram sequence to echo "pani vizhum malarvanam." Then I got more adventurous and tried a couple of other such patterns from popular songs.

It was quite random and never regular. I would do it once, forget about it and then try it again after a few concerts. Once after the season I made a visit to Mumbai for a concert and a listener came up to me and said "Sir, today you never sang any film song!

Music is universal. Genres have a way of evolving over time like language. You take in some, you leave out some, artists find ways of fulfilling creative challenges, audiences like, dislike, accept, reject and life goes on!

Musical notations have served Carnatic Music well. Whilst the popular method of dissemination of this musical form has been from person to person, periodic documentation has helped in ensuring there is an authentic historical record of the music of the times.

Today with extensive use of audio and video, musical notations have become almost redundant. However, people like me were part of a generation that has had the best of both worlds. We grew up at a time when our teachers insisted on learning by rote.

They also taught us to write and refer musical notations. By the time I reached my teens, audio recording was very common and a large portion of my musical learning used these materials.

Today it is so easy to video record anything and the challenge is more in actually wading through all these TBs of data to get what we want.

This series is a look into Musical Notations and how they shaped my own development as a musician over the years. It also briefly delves into the way Notations have helped the system overall. Every episode’s story is built around a ragam.

Notations

Early days of singing concerts from the period 1986 till about 1999-2000 was fairly straightforward. I was quite orthodox in my thinking, wanted to be very conventional in my approach and more than anything else enjoyed singing kutcheries.

There was the parallel career of a Chartered Accountant that I was having to deal with. It all changed when I decided to quit and become a full time musician from April 2000.

Interestingly this was also the time when I became more ambitious in my creative pursuits. You could say that I was becoming restless with what I was singing. I got tired of being predictable and repetitive in my music.

Some of my earlier beliefs about what I should/should not sing was also changing. I missed my Guru KSK mama. He had a way of keeping me on a path that beautifully tread the traditional with novelty. I tried to maintain this, but after his passing my thinking changed.

I started listening to a lot of other forms of music. The iPod was a prized possession and it was loaded with all kinds of music. North Indian classical, Western classical, rock and pop, old Hindi & Tamil film songs, ghazals etc.

My musical repertoire started changing slowly. I was singing RTPs in ragams that I did not believe in earlier. I was discovering how music had so much to offer beyond the 'usual' and I enjoyed trying stuff out on stage.

I also had other strong musical influences in my relationships. Musicians like Dr N Ramani, Nagai Muralidharan and Prince Rama Varma in their own quiet ways were pointing me out to musical nuggets that I had avoided in the past.

I still cherish a text message that I received from Rama Varma where he specifically mentioned how my music was changing and evolving in a very positive way.

I sang an RTP in Jonpuri at the Music Academy in Dec 2008, and a senior musician complained to the President that this was not on! I didn't care! I was having a ball, a lot of people seemed to like it and a close friend described this process as "breaking free" literally.

I remember a particular concert in KK Nagar, sometime in the late nineties, I was singing an alapana of Abhogi & as I finished it I just sang a slow phrase of "s d m g r s" keeping in mind the Ilayaraja classic "Kaalai nera poonguyil."

K Arun Prakash, the mridangam artiste, and a Raja pundit, just gave me an expression that I can never forget! 
I almost burst out laughing! That was probably the first instance of what has led to Short Notes today.

Short Notes just ended with 52 episodes! When we conceived this idea and recorded the first few episodes, I never thought I'd do this for as long as I did.

Growing up, I hardly had exposure to film music in my house. No one played Vividh Bharati on the radio. The moment film songs started after the mandatory Isai Arangam every morning on the Madras A channel of All India Radio, it would be muted.

Of course there would be the odd days when we had the house to ourselves and we could quietly turn on film music. I am talking about the period of 1974-75 to about 1982-83. We did not have a record player in our house, no television and only radio.

My knowledge of the popular songs of that time was always from my class mates in school. I studied in St Bede's in Madras, and the boys knew all the songs even as the films were released.

I also had a couple of aunts who would encourage me to listen to film music when I visited them and peer pressure and the fear of losing out to your friends forced one to keep up with the trendy songs of the time.

Of course at that time, we were blessed with some of the best music that was composed for cinema. Ilayaraja was king and we were his loyal subjects!

In 1982 there was a special Ilayaraja Live show that happened at the University Centenary Auditorium for the Platinum Jubilee Celebration of my school. We had such a ball that night jumping, cheering, singing along as the 'man' and his orchestra played on and on.

In 1986 I started performing concerts. My focus shifted to the classical genre and I never did get back to film music. I did keep up for a few more years till the early nineties and then I kind of switched off.

Now those of you who have been following Short Notes will know where this heading. Yes this is the reason why you will find less references to songs from the late- nineties and later.
