Sanjay Sabha began airing on the official Sanjay Subrahmanyan YouTube channel in January 2021. Last month S03E01 was the 25th episode of the series. Firstly my thanks to all the patron members who joined, renewed every month, and kept it going.
The pandemic created a situation where performing arts went through a huge depression. Artists had to dig into their creative reserves to keep them going.
I just want to pause for a moment and say a big Thank You to 2022! After so much uncertainty over the last couple of years we slowly saw some normalcy return to our lives.

As a performing musician, getting on stage, singing concerts to live audiences is the biggest motivation to get up to every morning. It is a blessing to be able to do what you like the most and I continue to be grateful to all of you for your overwhelming support.

Singing during Navarathri started pretty early for me. From the time I began learning music, every Navarathri, I would do the rounds of neighbouring houses and sing for my sundal.

Sanjay Sabha has completed 20 months of activity. We just uploaded the 20th concert on the YouTube channel and the upcoming Sanjay Sabha Live in Chennai will be our 10th such event.

I was singing a concert at the Academy in Dec 1992, and I finished the concert with "Maname ganamum" in Abheri.

A senior music listener and connoisseur, who had introduced me to some exquisite Carnatic music over the years, came up to me and said "How dare you sing a film song at the Music Academy?" He followed it up by saying he wouldn't have minded it if I had sung it anywhere else!

Musical notations have served Carnatic Music well. Whilst the popular method of dissemination of this musical form has been from person to person, periodic documentation has helped in ensuring there is an authentic historical record of the music of the times.

Today with extensive use of audio and video, musical notations have become almost redundant. However, people like me were part of a generation that has had the best of both worlds. We grew up at a time when our teachers insisted on learning by rote.

Early days of singing concerts from the period 1986 till about 1999-2000 was fairly straightforward. I was quite orthodox in my thinking, wanted to be very conventional in my approach and more than anything else enjoyed singing kutcheries.

There was the parallel career of a Chartered Accountant that I was having to deal with. It all changed when I decided to quit and become a full time musician from April 2000.
