Blockchains vs. DAGs

Did you know that Ethereum is a "Blockchain", while some cryptocurrencies like Fantom, Hedera, or AlephZero are what is called "DAGs" or "Directed Acyclic Graphs"? 🤔

This is an extremely technical topic, but we will break it down for you!

The basic function of cryptocurrencies is to store transactions on a decentralized database. 

We call such a database a distributed ledger technology or DLTs. 

There are different types of DLTs

Traditionally, cryptocurrencies run on a DLT called a Blockchain.

i.e., blockchain is a distributed ledger technology or DLT.

Here, transactions are stored in a linear chain of blocks
These blocks are both unalterable (A.K.A immutable) and in chronological order

Each block contains a set number of transactions, and each block is cryptographically linked to the previous block(s) using a unique code known as a hash to prevent tampering.

In summary, "Blockchain" is a type DLT or Distributed Ledger Technology which are used as a decentralized database to store crypto transactions.

Though Blockchains are extremely secure and a proven DLT, it suffers from an array of problems 👇

Since blockchains have a linear "one after another" structure, as we mentioned, it is exposed to what is known as "Blockchain Trilemma."


"Blockchain Trilemma" refers to the inability or difficulty in building a blockchain that is simultaneously: 

1) Decentralised 
2) Scalable 
3) Secure 

without compromising on any individual factor

e.g., ETH is highly Decentralized and Secure but can only process ~30 transactions per second (TPS) 

- meaning it is not scalable and transaction fees are high as users must effectively 'compete' for space in each block


This is where a new DLT called Directed Acyclic Graph, or DAG, comes to play!

It aims to solve the "Blockchain Trilemma"

This is a Blockchain where blocks are linear in a "one after another" fashion.

Each block contains a set no. of transactions

Now this is a Directed Acyclic Graph or DAG. 

Projects such as $IOTA, $FTM, $HBAR, and $AZERO have decided to ditch blockchain technology altogether and use different variations of DAGs.

In DAGs there are no blocks. 

The circles you see (graph vertex) are individual transactions directly linked.

Let me explain with an example 👇

4 people (A,B,C,D) are in a room. 'A' needs to send a message to 'D'.

In a blockchain, the message is passed along a chain, i.e., A→B→C→D.

In a DAG, it is shortened to A→D, speeding up the process for the 2 main participants- and D will inform B and C of the message later.

So, DAGs are NOT linear and are directed because it follows a topological order, i.e., the sequence can only move from earlier to later

In a DAG, all users are both issuers (i.e., they make/send transactions) AND validators.

This is in contrast to Proof-of-stake Blockchains like Cosmos $ATOM which has separate "Validators" in the network to verify the transactions.

NOTE: No network user can validate their own transaction 

While users both transact and validate transactions, they cannot validate their own transactions.

That's the acyclic part of DAG - there is never a circular arrow back to the same node (vertex)

Because of this structure, DAGs are extremely scalable (10,000+ Transactions per second or TPS, theoretically 1M+ TPS), lightweight, and have zero or negligible transaction fees.

Now the important part 👇

The extent to which a DAG is "Decentralized" and "Secure" depends heavily on the no. of transactions currently happening.

A REDUCTION in the volume of transactions leaves DAGs VULNERABLE to attack.

More the merrier!

To mitigate this risk, DAG projects include centralized features (e.g., central coordinators or pre-selected validators). 

Therefore, DAGs have not solved the trilemma either - at least not yet.

It's also important to remember that DAGs are new, unproven technology.

The future remains unclear

The 'perfect' DLT is yet to emerge (if it ever does)

Blockchains and DAGs will likely co-exist, serving distinct purposes - or a totally new DLT may arise.

We'll try to explain with an analogy

Let's say Ethereum is the most popular Mall in your area.

And we know Malls tend to get very crowded on the weekends

Now, let's say you're going to the Mall on a Sunday by car.

So it's sure to have heavy traffic, and you probably will have to wait 30-40 minutes just to get parking!

Basically, it's slow and also expensive because of high fuel prices.

But you know what the rich guys do?

They go for Valet parking

They don’t care about the cost, they just want to reach the mall in time.

This is exactly what’s happening to Ethereum Now.

The rich whales pay high gas fees for their transactions to go thru, while plebs have to wait and also pay the base gas fee for their transaction to go thru.

This is where Polygon comes in...

Polygon makes it 2-3x faster and 10x cheaper to use Ethereum

But How?

Let's come back to the analogy.

Say, there is a city bus to the mall.

The city bus picks up people in Batches and takes them to the mall.

It's cheaper and more efficient.

This is exactly how SCALING works...

Ethereum is the Layer 1 or, in our case, the mall.

Polygon is a Layer 2, which makes the experience of going to the mall much smoother.

But, Polygon is not the only Layer 2 solution!

There are two others already in the market, Optimism and ZK layer 2 solutions.

Let's get back to the analogy...👇

Optimism is the city bus to the mall. 

It takes time but is cheap.

@arbitrum and @optimismFND $OP are two live examples of Optimistic type Layer 2 solutions

ZK is like taking a metro train to the mall. 

It's fast and cheap but takes time to develop the train

@StarkWareLtd and @loopringorg $LRC are two live examples.


Now, let's assume that shops inside the malls are akin to dapps within Ethereum

For, eg.

Nike store -> AAVE
Adidas store -> Uniswap

For Optimism and ZK, even though they can access the mall, the stores must make some difficult changes from their end to actually service the Optimism and ZK customers.

Now, this is where zkEVM comes to play!

In zkEVM, you get the metro train + easy transition for stores like Nike and Adidas to service the customers

It's basically The Holy Grail

EVM stands for Ethereum Virtual Machine.
So if you have EVM, it's easier for Nike and Adidas to service you.

So last day, Polygon Announced the "1st" zkEVM

But tbh, it's not the first...

Players can do various activities inside the game to earn rewards and then make money by selling them on the NFT marketplace.

7/ Axie Infinity is an #NFT game inspired by Pokémon and Tamagotchi.

The stock market is still incredibly up for the entire time period

It has increased by 200x since 1929!

Not much if you annualize the returns, nonetheless a great tool for wealth preservation

I believe it is safe to rule out a Great Depression. The global economy would probably not survive something like that.

The world isn’t what it was in 1929.

14/ Being optimistic and willing to take measured risks pays off in the long term.

And since bear markets don’t last forever, now is a great time to put on some ASYMMETRIC bets

Simply put, an asymmetric bet is one in which the upside potential far outweighs the downside risk.

15/ Theres benefits to these type of bets

- Since the upside is massive, you don’t need to play with leverage. That gives you tremendous HODL power 💪

- You don’t need a lot of capital to make big net returns 💰

- Bear markets only improves the asymmetry of those bets 🤩

The L1 revolution is gaining momentum. However, one blockchain project that is severely undervalued right now is Fantom.

First, let's start with the basics.

What is #FTM?

Fantom is a fast and scalable next-gen Layer-1 platform. 

Layer-1 refers to the blockchain networks like Bitcoin and Ethereum.

$FTM uses a leaderless Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism called Lachesis.

Simply put, a consensus mechanism is an engine that powers the blockchain.

Lachesis is a faster, more scalable, and more secure choice than the Classical Nakamoto consensus #Bitcoin uses.

Transactions fees are low compared to $SOL and $LUNA. 

Transaction Finality on $FTM is around 1-2 seconds. 

Finality is when the block is confirmed. For $ETH, it is 10 minutes, and for $BTC, it could take up to an hour.

The fact that $FTM is more centralized than a network like $ETH could still be a problem.

However, investors do not care about this in the short run if we look at the success of $SOL and $NEAR.

TVL represents the total value of assets locked on the chain or protocol. Therefore, TVL is often seen as a measure of the overall health of any given DeFi protocol. 

The higher the TVL, the more $$$ is being implemented on the chain.

Fantom has a market cap of just under $3 billion with $5.84 billion in TVL. 

So how does this compare to other layer 1 chains? 

By this metric, as shown below, $FTM is significantly undervalued with a ratio of just 0.50

1/ First, let's start with the basics

What is #NEAR?

$NEAR is a Layer 1 (L1) blockchain like $ETH or $SOL

L1s are capable of validating and completing transactions on their own 

2/ $NEAR uses a proof-of-stake or POS mechanism to secure the blockchain

Here, users can delegate/send their $NEAR to validator nodes and receive staking rewards

- A node is a computer running blockchain software
- A validator is a node that has locked up a certain no of tokens

3/ 
- NEAR was launched with 1 billion $NEAR tokens as total supply
- Out of that, 660m NEAR tokens are currently circulating in the market
- A total of 100 validators staked 450m $NEAR tokens

Nearly ~70% of the circulating supply is staked!

The current staking yield is ~10% 

4/ However, it's important to note that the $NEAR token is inflationary by design but can become deflationary with increased network usage

- There's a 5% inflation for validator rewards
- However, it has a fee-burn mechanism (70% of fees burned) that could reduce inflation

5/ $NEAR Token Distribution

37.7% to backers and contributors, the rest to the community

6/ Speed

To achieve high TPS (transaction per second), $NEAR uses a DYNAMIC re-sharding mechanism.

But what is Sharding?

Let's take an example 👇 

7/ Ethereum's current design can be compared to a single lane road

It works fine when there's less traffic but becomes horrendous during congestion

Sharding turns this single lane road into a highway with multiple lanes

ETH 2.0 brings sharding with 64 different lanes or shards

8/ NEAR brings "Dynamic Sharding"

Instead of the static 64 shards in $ETH's case, $NEAR constantly readjusts the no. of shards based on utilization.

This reduces the avg cost of using the network while maintaining high transaction throughput.

NEAR calls it 'Nightshade'

3/ There are 3 gaming activities a user can choose from, each with its own risk and ROI

1. Mining
2. Looting
3. Breeding

Let's get into each

4/ Mining

Crabs can be sent as a team of three to mine specific locations on the map in search of rewards. 

Mining takes up to 4 hrs, with no supervision needed. 

Successful mining will give players a return of 3.75 $CRA and 303.75 $TUS

More on the tokens later 🦀 

5/ Looting

Players can send a team of three crabs to LOOT other players' treasury in search of a higher reward than mining. 

However, the players can successfully defend their treasury, thus failing the looting expedition.

Looting takes around 1hr to 2.5 hrs

6/ Looting

Looting time depends on the reinforcement sent by the defending player.

Yes, you can send reinforcement if your treasury gets attacked ⚔️ 

Attackers get 0.3 CRA and 24.3 TUS for participation and If you win, you'll get 2.4375 $CRA and 197.4375 $TUS 

7/ The defender will lose 65% of their treasury if failed to defend.

Unused Crabs can be lent out to other players for fees determined by the lenders. 

The platform will charge 10% of this fee as commission.

8/ The Crabs have 8 classes with respective stats

For eg: Crabs with higher speed can reduce your mining expedition by up to 30 min

9/ Breeding
 
Players can breed two crabs to get offspring. Breeding needs some $CRA and $TUS

A Breeded egg needs a 5 day hatching period.

Offspring crabs have a 50–50 chance of becoming the class of either father or mother. 

10/ Now let's get into the tokens!

11/ $TUS

It's the In-game token, you'll get it by doing gaming activities like looting and mining. 

Players can use it to buy Crabs, pay borrowing fees, etc.

It's the Governance token for #Crabada and was given as an incentive for the first 3 months of gaming activities.

13/ $CRAM

You'll get $CRAM when you stake $CRA for 21 days.
