The response to my @TableauPublic map of Kyoto's cherry blossom sites has been overwhelming! Thank you so much!🙏
Just some random thoughts on how it (accidentally) came together... layer by layer.
#RandomQGIStoTableauStuff #21
The 1st layer is a basic circle, which is actually a shapefile created in @QGIS.
Here's an earlier post that briefly describes the process on how to draw shapes: typefully.com/professorkao/locator-maps-0Ts4T1P
And then we can simply add this circle as a map layer in the same sheet in @TableauPublic!
The initial plan was to create a basic circular map of Kyoto & its cherry blossom sites...
The 2nd layer is a shapefile of buildings, clipped to the circle in @QGIS & seems to provide a nice starry backdrop.✨
I describe that process here: typefully.com/professorkao/circular-map-aN1ZWSM
The 3rd layer is based on a shapefile of waterways... and this was the accidental part… I suddenly noticed how the rivers come together & form what look like a tree!! 🤔😳🤯🤩🌸
In @QGIS, I used the "Selection by Location" tool & manually selected specific line segments…
The 4th layer includes some of the key cherry blossom sites in Kyoto (based on a basic Google search)
To symbolize the points, I used a flower image... I liked & added it as a custom shape🌸
Here's a post (not mine) on using custom shapes in Tableau: help.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-us/viewparts_marks_markproperties.htm
And here's the link to my map again: tabsoft.co/3PL6sL2
The shapefiles came from OpenStreetMap data, which I downloaded from: download.geofabrik.de/
I hope this was helpful. Let me know if you have any questions.
