How to start a newsletter in 10 steps Thread 🧵
1️⃣ Start with why If it’s just because “everyone is doing it,” that isn’t good enough You need to have a specific reason for why you want to start a #newsletter What is your "why?"
2️⃣ Refine your topic Once you have your “why” figured out, next you’ll want to dial in on your newsletter's niche For example: 🧠 @land_ofrandom shares cool random links 📈 @RobinhoodSnacks provides bite-sized financial news 🤖 @daniel_eckler talks about emerging tech
3️⃣ Decide on the format, frequency, and design Will you have curated links as I do in Growth Marketing Weekly? Or in-depth case studies like @theandreboso does in Zero to Marketing? There are many other formats to consider You also need to think about the design too
4️⃣ Choose an email platform For Growth Marketing Weekly I use 🟦 @activecampaign But what you use is up to you Here are other tools I recommend you explore: 🟥 @ConvertKit 🟧 @SubstackInc 🟪 @emailoctopus 🟩 @MailerLite 🟨 @beehiiv
5️⃣ Write your welcome email Your welcome email is the automated message that gets sent right away when someone opts-in It’s important because it: 🤩 Builds engagement ✉️ Helps with deliverability 🚨 Allows you to offer a quick call-to-action
6️⃣ Create a landing page The next step in the process is to build your newsletter opt-in landing page I use @unbounce to build and test multiple opt-in landing pages for Growth Marketing Weekly
7️⃣ Get everything connected Make sure that when someone subscribes, they get added to the correct list and are ready to receive the next edition @zapier can be a lifesaver when it comes to connecting everything together on the backend
8️⃣ Make it easy to opt-in In addition to having a robust landing page, you should also consider utilizing popups, sticky bars, slide-ups, and embedded forms on your website in order to get even more subscribers @convertflow is a powerful tool that can help with this
9️⃣ Get feedback on your first issue If I could do it over again, I’d make sure that my first edition of the newsletter was only sent to a small, close circle of friends, family, and colleagues who have offered to give me feedback This feedback is invaluable early on
🔟 Tell the world about it And now you’ve made it to the last step! Some ideas to help you promote your newsletter to the world: 📣 Share it on social 💵 Consider running ads 👋 Post in forums/groups 🔗 Add a link in your email sig 💯 Cross-promote with other writers
✋ Do you have a newsletter—or an idea for one? I'd love to hear about what you're working on or answer any specific newsletter questions Share below!
