/ Sentence completion is a simple yet extremely powerful exercise for raising self-understanding, self-esteem, and personal effectiveness. A thread on how it works and how you can practice it in your day-to-day.
/ Sentence completion rests on the premise that each of us has more knowledge than we normally think, more wisdom than we use, more potential than typically show up in our day-to-day behavior.
/ By practicing sentence completion, we access and activate this hidden knowledge, and bring our awareness to it to analyze it and expand our consciousness.
/ This is how it works: • Write an incomplete sentence called sentence stem • Keep adding different endings to it • Write a minimum of 6 endings
/ Write them as rapidly as possible: • Don't pause to think • Don't worry if a particular ending is true or significant • Any ending is fine, just keep going
/ Here are some examples of sentence stems: • "Living consciously to me means ..." • "If I bring 5% more awareness to my activities today ..."
/ First thing in the morning, sit down and complete the above stems: • Write as many endings as you can in 2-3 mins • Do this exercise every day, Monday through Friday for the first week • Don't read what you wrote the day before
/ Naturally, there'll be repetitions, but also new endings. You're energizing all of your psyches to work for you.
/ Each weekend, re-read what you have written for the week, and write a minimum of 6 endings to this stem: "If any of what I wrote this week is true, it would be helpful if I ..."
/ An average session shouldn't take longer than 10 mins. If so, you're 'thinking' (rehearsing, calculating) too much.
/ After you've worked with these stems for 2 weeks, you can begin using other stems to help raise your awareness of particular issues.
/ For example: If I bring 5% more awareness to: • My relationship with ... • My insecurities and depressions ... • My concerns about ... • My impulses to avoid unpleasant facts ... • My needs and wants ... • My deepest values and goals ...
/ If I bring 5% more awareness to: • My emotions ... • My priorities ... • How sometimes I stand in my own way ... • How I make it difficult for people to give me what I want ...
END/ To recap: • Sentence completion is great to raise self-awareness/effectiveness • The use cases are endless — work, relationships, values, etc. • Practiced consistently, it gently/quietly generates positive change
