What's holding you back from your most important work?
Kicking off the weekend at @KelleySchool tackling a universal challenge: distractions.
But not all distractions are created equal or even properly defined. Let's start by defining distractions vs. interruptions.
Distractions are external stimuli that pull our attention away from the task at hand.
Examples:
- Slack notifications
- Social media scrolling
- Text messages
- News updates
- nba playoffs 😅
None of these are bad on their own. Only when they directly remove you from the task
Interruptions involve an active intrusion into our workflow by another person or event.
Examples:
- Coworkers stopping by to chat
- Family members asking for help
- Friends calling unexpectedly
- Impromptu meetings
- Clients calling with urgent issues
The key difference lies in our control; we have more power over distractions than we realize, allowing us to minimize their impact.
The biggest takeaway: you control what gets in and gains power over you.
