Typefully is fantastic and way too cheap for what you get.
We’ve tried many alternatives at @framer but nothing beats it. If you’re still tweeting from Twitter you’re wasting time.

Looking back at the road less travelled.
At the beginning of 2020, I had a rosy dream of working for 5 years and retiring to "enjoy" my life later.
Little did I know that I would quit my job without a backup plan with an unknown future. Reflecting on my 18-month journey
Due to unforeseen circumstances, I quit my job on July 2021. My first reaction was to look for another job that would fuel my dream to retire early.
I met incredible folks who were happy to absorb me into their organisation.
The job titles were fancy enough to bump up my LinkedIn -> Design Manager, Head of Design, Director and so on.
But my heart was in user research. Unfortunately the ecosystem didn't have enough senior roles that allowed me to do explore the realm of Indian consumer behaviour.
I was looking at two options
1. To take up a design job where I would compete with hundred other designers who will eventually replace me.
2. To take the road less travelled, which challenges to craft my own path.
The second option was scary, yet I decided to give it a shot.
A mental model that helped me make the decision was this quote by @naval.
“You can escape competition through authenticity when you realize that no one can compete with you on being you."
I was fortunate enough to have friends and well-wishers who gave me consulting projects to help their orgs set up research teams and research frameworks.
In the last year, I worked on insure-tech, kirana-tech and creator economy. Each team now has full-time research functions.
One another challenge of a non-existent research team was the lack of awareness among stakeholders.
With @yourNextLeap, I launched the 'Deriving User Insights' program for product managers to teach qualitative research. The first-of-its-kind program for India.
In addition to that, I began teaching a module on User research and personas to their flagship Product Management & Design Fellowship.
I interacted with 500+ young folks who were introduced to user research from my lens.
Every new batch gives me a fresh perspective on how they look at research and allows me to tweak my syllabus to make them as simple as possible.
I wanted to take the principles of user research to a larger set of audience. I started a newsletter called 'The India Notes', where I wrote about insights into Indian consumer behaviour.
I conducted my own study and wrote engaging stories about consumer behaviour.
The newsletter today has around 1900 subscribers. It was not the numbers but the quality of connections that nudged me to write more.
I was fortunate to meet and introduce my research techniques to young founders, VCs and designers.
Despite these wins, there was one thing that bothered me. It was the guilt of not being able to do field visits for research.
I was finally able to break the spell in 2022. After 3 years I visited few villages in Tamilnadu.

Working independently has its cons
• It feels lonely.
• It's challenging to measure progress.
• The direction is unclear.
• Difficult to measure the impact.
and most importantly, when someone asks you, 'What do you do?', I have no answer to it.
But on the brighter side
- I get to watch morning shows on PVR on weekdays.
- I get to travel at traffic-free times in Bangalore.
- I get to travel to places and meet interesting people as a part of my research who alter my worldviews.
I learn more from a farmer about life than from than the affluent metro man. Research allows me to do two things I absolutely love
1. To listen to stories
2. To retell them to the world.
My cash flow is never predictable. There are happy months, and there are months with no income.
During the months when I had additional income, I bought gadgets, subscriptions and everything that I thought would give me happiness.
But I quickly lost interest in them. Once, I had an Amazon package which I had not opened for a week.
That's when I realised the value this stuff added to my life.
When I look back, I enjoyed the most when
- I watch movies in the theatre.
- I explore idly and dosa places in Bangalore.
- I spend time with my wife and parents.
- I discover and meet interesting people on the internet.
and none of them needed crazy money.
Last but not least, I had the full support of my wife @subitchapoorani and my mom, who promised to take care of me and my finances if shit went down.
I feel lucky!
I look forward to 2023 with more exciting field studies across India. I aim to build mental models around digital consumer behaviour for a culturally diverse country like India.
If you are looking to go independent, shoot your questions :) Happy New Year.
If you are discovering my work for the first time, here is the link to the newsletter that I write on Indian consumer behaviour. 👇
