The European Union has announced sanctions against seven Russian individuals and five entities connected to a disinformation network called the Recent Reliable News (RRN). RRN aimed to undermine Western support for Ukraine.
The sanctions come after the French government exposed the network in June. The entities targeted include InfoRos news agency, the Institute of the Russian Diaspora, the ANO Dialog nonprofit, and the Social Design Agency.
Reports state that RRN created fake social media accounts and websites to spread propaganda about the war in Ukraine. The EU alleges the Russian government and its intelligence services played a part in the RRN operation.
These sanctions follow similar actions from the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia. The EU has been strengthening its strategies to counter foreign information manipulation and interference, focusing on the behavior of threat actors beyond just the content they produce.
