The idea that self-esteem is earned is an inhumane approach to personal development.
I wish I knew where the expression, ‘Self-esteem is earned’ came from, but I believe the problem with it is found in the definition of the verb, 'to earn.'
To earn is related to what you get (usually money) in return for your labour or service.
If you can only earn self-esteem according to how others 'value' you, you will have to continuously compete for self-efficacy and self-worth by being rewarded for your work.
Earning self-esteem is commodification and wrong.
You do not need to earn what is an inherent and natural aspect of your humanity.
If you believe you must earn your self-esteem, you reduce yourself to a widget — a commodity within a capitalist framework.
If you can't sell self-esteem, you can't earn it.
