Exciting update: my metabolism pens have been upgraded to v2! 🎉 

Metal has replaced the previous 2x4s, we’re providing more headroom for feed bunks, and a simplified hose-tension mechanism has been installed. 🔨 

The new design is performing great for collections this week! 🙏

A massive thanks to the @DanforthCenter for hosting a highly informative tour of their facilities for the @FFARFellows! 

The highlight: a panel of researchers from startups, centuries-old companies, and in-between sharing their unique experiences over lunch!

I’m increasingly interested in the entrepreneurs behind entrepreneurs, as they call it @CortexSTL. 

Their goal? Supporting innovation of startups by providing affordable office and lab space, and connecting talented entrepreneurs within a shared space. 

Innovative if you ask me!

Great visit to @Bayer today with the @FFARFellows! Generous scientists shared advice for applying to industry jobs:

1) don’t doubt your qualifications, just apply
2) job options should include topics tangential to research area
3) build connections >1 yr before applying for jobs 

While reading this, I couldn’t help but reflect on the great leaders that I’ve crossed paths with. These leaders have a unique ability to inspire through vulnerability instead of insisting out of insecurity.

Recently I was reflecting on my 2016 internship at @cogentbreeding in the UK. 🇬🇧

It was one of the most rewarding decisions I ever made, mostly due to the people I was able to work with (especially @hughpocock)!

Here are a few aspects that I enjoyed, both in and outside my job: 

The knowledgeable, caring, and passionate farmers. I was amazed at the lengths these farmers would go to keep their calves healthy. They would ask great questions and listen with a critical ear so as not to have the wool pulled over their eyes.

The large role that sheep still play in their agriculture industry. Although there still is large sheep production in the US, it is not like it was 50 years ago and not even close to matching the UK (including epic sheering contests).

The rich culture and variety of agriculture in the UK. The cattle shows were a sight to behold—people showing all breeds of cattle and from all walks of life—there was still a strong connection of the general public to agriculture.

And, of course, the beautiful countryside of England and Scotland, but that is a given with geography like this...

This was just a small part of my time as an intern, but working in the UK helped me better appreciate the international beef cattle industry. After reliving these memories, I am itching to get back to the UK!

We work with our fistulated steers so that students are safe handling them and so that steers aren’t stressed by our interactions. 🐂

However, one thing we did not train them on is being affectionate, which would surprise you if you saw them today… 😅

Great way to reframe effort required to be discovered as a writer. The compounding effect of creating quality output is tangential—every “deposit” into the “binge bank” increases the chance for discovery of previous content, i.e. “interest.”

A great point from @jayclouse—broader than business, there aren’t fast lanes to credentials/authority because you must first build trust/rapport, which are both lost faster than built. This seems to be true universally, in academia, industry, & university.
