Finally got my hands on a @Trezor and it has met my expectations of what a hardware wallet should be – simple and effective.
The Trezor Model One packaging is protected by two silver seals on both sides and is wrapped in a thin plastic foil. The package is carefully sealed with a strong glue, which makes it impossible to open the package without tearing it apart. I had to use a pair of scissors.
Installed firmware from the official website via the Trezor Suite for Web. One key point to note is that all Trezor devices are shipped without firmware installed and installation is only done during the setup process – this is to ensure that the Trezor isn’t tampered with.
Took a minute or two for the firmware to be installed successfully.
Wallet creation involves entropy (means randomness), and the unique seed phrase is made up of words from the 2048 word list. Keep this safe.
Another safety feature : Trezor automatically wipes itself after 16 unsuccessful PIN attempts (vs 3 attempts for the Ledger).
At this point, I would wipe my Trezor (!) and go through the process of restoring my wallet using my seed phrase. After all the time and effort spent, the last thing we want is to repeat the whole process – but you’ll be surprised by how much simpler it is the 2nd time we do it.
Interactions with Decentralized Finance (DeFi) requires the presence of a wallet such as MetaMask. MetaMask simply works as an interface to bridge the gap between DeFi apps and my Trezor, but key point is that the private keys never leave my Trezor.
It is important to stress that we should not be mistakenly associated with a false sense of security just because we are using a hardware wallet. Importantly, a hardware wallet creates a separate layer of scrutiny prior to physically pressing a button to confirm a transaction.
Simple is underrated - There is a lot less likelihood of something going wrong. Bonus - The screen on the Trezor One isn’t huge but it’s larger than what Ledger Nano S has. Due to this difference, public addresses of crypto wallets fits entirely on the Trezor One display!
@bitcoinwalletsg (Authorized Reseller of Trezor) offered me a chance to try out the Trezor and they are giving away a free Trezor One worth $129.90 plus an exclusive 5% discount code. I wrote a super detailed 2,500 words blog post on Trezor One. turtleinvestor.net/i-review-the-trezor-one-hardware-wallet-and-show-you-how-to-use-it-with-metamask/
