I spent my last day as @Poynter faculty on PTO — connecting with my amazing 17-month-old, with former colleagues and new friends. I didn't realize how disconnected I had become. It's good to be back! 🤗 But I can't end this day without a Poynter highlight reel. (tape = 🧵)
☝️ Shout-out to @poynter's exceptionally talented, caring and magical faculty: @DorisTruong @kristenhare @sitaranieves @atompkins @kellymcb @tomthuang Their investment in the journalism industry and hope for our collective future is unmatched. "Poynter magic" exists bc of them.
✌️ I'm most proud of the personal study and time I spent developing expertise in trauma-informed leadership, which I see being marked by empathy, resilience and action. I'm humbled to have been trusted to train 1,000s of journalists this year alone on trauma and resilience.
I learned from neuroscientist Dr. Bruce Perry that connectedness has the power to counterbalance adversity, and this idea serves as the bridge for helping journalists better understand the impact of trauma AND how they can manage those impacts. twitter.com/katikokal/status/1549823001444622336?s=20&t=jNyES86aGl806haf8Tiyig
I appreciate the autonomy I had at Poynter to create programs like Lead with Influence, a unique curriculum for women/nonbinary journalists who lead projects, products and processes—not people. @kathyluwho is now lead faculty and you should totally apply! poynter.org/shop/leadership/lead-with-influence-october-2022/
I loved co-directing the Poynter-Koch Media and Journalism Fellowship with Jaymee Copenhaver and Tim McCaughan and joyfully handed it over to the capable hands, hearts and minds of @kristenhare, @omarg and @AvQueenBenet earlier this year. poynter.org/shop/reporting-editing/poynter-koch-media-and-journalism-fellowship-2022-23/
If you missed this piece by former fellow @schick_will, give it a read. Less for the program's sake and more for your own. Will is a talented journalist who embraces curiosity, empathy and innovation. Can you believe the industry almost missed him??? poynter.org/from-the-institute/2022/how-a-military-veteran-found-his-place-in-the-world-of-journalism/
While I'm no longer teaching in Power of Diverse Voices, I hope you'll consider applying. Lead faculty @tomthuang is one of the most generous and patient news leaders you will ever meet, and as a writer especially, he has so much to share with you. poynter.org/shop/writing/power-of-diverse-voices-writing-workshop-for-journalists-of-color-november-2022/
💥 And I can't forget the women's leadership academy!💥 Aaaah.. this program is forever close to my heart 💖 Because of this academy, as I have said since 2016, my career has accelerated at a pace I and taken on a trajectory I could not have anticipated. poynter.org/shop/leadership/poynter-leadership-academy-for-women-in-media-2023/
If my former job as director of @poynter's leadership academy for women sounds like a dream to you, shoot your shot 🏀 Listen, Poynter trusts its faculty to be great at the work. If you tend toward excellence and care, apply. 🚨Deadline is Aug. 31 🚨 jobs.mediajobboard.com/company/the-poynter-institute-278801/job/faculty-member-poynter-in-saint-petersburg-fl-ws7s4d9jrds97r8cu29rjzssqgco0v/?sid=987399277&ref=company
FINALLY 📣 I cannot wait to get started as VP of Journo Programs for @ampress 💯 🙌🏽. I've got a dope team in @emilyristow @kamarialeyla @LDeshan & @triciacantor, and we're ready to break some molds. My calendar opens back up in Oct. so don't be shy, y'all! calendly.com/sragland
