Who is @sarahjustanidea? Sarah Andelman is the co-founder of @coletteparis and founder of Just an Idea. Colette, founded by Sarah & her mom, was a single site store in Paris that transformed the worlds of fashion, streetwear, design, art & food through their unique curation.
Top Lesson from Jeff: For me, it's the beginning of the ep where he leaves in a part from the setup where he admits he's new at it. Creators often baulk at new tech b/c they want perfection. Jump in. We are all learning & he did one of the 1st interviews on medium with Sarah
Top Lesson from Sarah: Do things that don't scale as a founder. Founders with big vision that are successful are so b/c they are obsessed with the details & how those details reflect that vision. Sarah's Sunday store changes, email habits, & curation reflect that obsession!
Sarah and her mom having the level of involvement they did was reflective of the fact that they didn't want to scale past the one store and, in their eyes, in order to execute on that vision of that concept store, they had to commit to that level of detail.
Favorite anecdote: Sarah describing that they designed the concept for the store around the space. And that space, was integral to their experience and life - they lived & worked there! This is why pop ups & e-commerce changed that experience.
The multiple levels of the store facilitated the curation of different items across genres, as well as the fact that they had a store, gallery, & restaurant all in one. In our digital world we forget the importance of space & place. How do we recreate this in digital space?
Advice for entrepreneurs: embrace the living nature of the things we are building. Just like organisms, our projects and companies change due to the tools available to us, because we change, and because culture changes. Adapt or die.
Advice for marketers: the world is accelerating! The barriers between our product experiences and consumers is disappearing due to this. Find new ways to communicate w/ customers due to this. Tech is just a medium. The content you curate and the story you tell matters!
Lesson on collaboration: She didn't distinguish between high fashion partners like @COMMEGARCONS & more accessible partners like the @GapInc. What they built together and the experience they created for customers to enjoy was the most important thing.
Life lesson: do what is instinctual to you and what you are passionate about; trust your gut and go do what it is telling you to do. Don't doubt yourself! And if your life is split into 3 lives, what are those chapters about and are they the chapters you wanted to write?
