1. Your first line is everything. 

Great first lines

• Illicit an emotion
• Display a strong message
• Are entertaining, validating, or educational

2. Stop comparing yourself. 

You can NEVER write exactly like someone else

You can NEVER think exactly like someone else

You can NEVER be exactly like someone else

Focus on yourself.

3. Fall in love with research. 

Read books, essays, and articles.

21 writing tips that will score you $2100 a day in 2 weeks: 

1. Choose active voice over passive voice.

2. Don’t tell the reader show the reader. 

Which sounds better? Jen hated her ex-boyfriend’s new girl.

or 

Jen spent day and night wishing Ashley a slow walk down a hill of knives.

3. Present your work like a boss

1-inch margins, double spaced, H1,H2,H3 headings.

Readers want your writing to play over and over again in their mind. Almost like a broken record. Give them the satisfaction by being as descriptive as possible.

4. Remove uncertain language.

“Seems to be” and  “could be for a reason” make you sound like you’re being deposed.

5. Avoid repetition.

Unless you’re writing a poem you really shouldn’t be saying the same sentence 4 times.

6. Kill “very” and “really” from every sentence.

7. Provide context when introducing a new idea.

8. Less is more.

Why say it in 21 words when you can say it in 12.

10. Pique curiosity.

Find an angle that catches your reader’s attention.

11. Choose words wisely.

Familiar vocabulary makes it easy for your reader to understand.

12. Simple sentences are more powerful than complex sentences.

14. Kill the adverb.

Instead of “Speaks loosely” say “blabbers.”
Instead of “Walks quietly” say “tiptoes.”

Don’t fall victim to the demise of passive voice.

16. Think about your ideal reader. 

As you write ask yourself:

• What are they struggling with?
• What is their reality?
• How can I help?

17. Brush up on basic writing skills.  

The best writers read just as much as they write. Brush up on things like sentence structure, word choice, and the way your writing flows.
