Then everything changed when I discovered the art of storytelling with purpose.



Some people learn through textbooks, others learn and connect through stories. It's no secret, but many people still struggle to use this to communicate their message well.

Introduction - why you need purpose-driven storytelling

As an ambivert, I took some time last year to reflect on why reading is my favorite hobby and why it's important to read more books by indie, notable, and lesser-known authors.

I found 12 great reasons to read more books than you normally would this year, and here they are: 🧵

1. Reading is good for your mental health.

2. Buying books puts food on somebody else’s table; it’s how you support authors and it's sometimes cheaper than that espresso.

3. Reading helps us cope with life’s ebbs and flows.

4. For writers, reading is the quickest way to learn the craft of writing and the difference between a good and a great book.

5. Reading breeds innovation, as it shows you what’s already been done (or overdone) so you can add to it with your creativity.

6. Reading can help you assess and assert your feelings about important subjects critically (critical thinking for the win).

7. There’s a book about everything you want to know.

8. By reading about other people’s experiences, you learn valuable lessons and save yourself the time it would take to go through the same things to gain the same experience.

12 Great Reasons to Read More Books

Being an employee is really easy.

Your boss is the only motivation you need to keep showing up each morning, because if you don't, you might get fired.

But working for yourself is a skill foreign to many people.

New skills take time to be learned and mastered. Nothing happens overnight, and it's not easy to switch from the mindset of an employee to that of an entrepreneur.

Being an entrepreneur requires a completely different set of skills and attitudes than those of an employee.

You will experience self-doubt and sometimes you must do the work of entire departments.

You must be willing to take risks, think outside the box, and have the determination to succeed no matter what the odds are.

You will need to be creative and innovative, as well as resourceful and driven to make your business a success.

You will also need a support system to help you through the tough times.

Having a mentor, coach, or friend to lean on can be invaluable in helping you stay motivated and stay on track.

And remember: just because it's not easy to be your own boss doesn't mean you must stay an employee forever.

With the right attitude and determination, you can make the switch from employee to entrepreneur and be successful.

Being an Employee vs an Entrepreneur: The Differences and Challenges

There is nothing wrong with writing for a specific niche, but you don't need a niche to start offering value to the people that already follow you.

The key is to create content that is tailored to the interests of your existing audience.

This could be anything from blog posts, videos, podcasts, and social media posts.

Figure out what resonates with your followers and create content that speaks directly to them.

You can also use analytics to determine what kind of content resonates with your existing audience and adjust accordingly.

Additionally, staying up to date with industry trends and news will help you create content that is relevant and timely.

When you focus on providing valuable content to your existing audience, it will help to create a loyal fanbase, and you can eventually niche down or expand your reach to a larger, more diverse audience.

But what's important to remember is

you don't need to limit yourself to a particular niche in order to begin offering your followers valuable content.

1. Watch great movies and take note of the storytelling devices used.

2. Watch narrated documentaries (e.g. wildlife) and do the same.

3. Ask yourself, "Why is this engaging/interesting? Why do I want to keep watching?"

4. Write down the answers to those questions, then write down every wild and original idea that comes to your mind.

5. Make each idea into a story with a beginning, a middle, and end using what you have learned.

I thought I was too cool to be on Facebook until I decided to take a deep dive into Content Marketing.

Facebook was found to be the best social media platform to promote your content in 2023, followed by Instagram, and YouTube, with LinkedIn coming in fourth according to SEMrush’s latest State of Content Marketing global report.

Writing Men's Feelings vs Writing Women's Feelings

A thread 🧵

Men have been written about as people without feelings for ages, and even when they're afforded some feelings, it's usually in machismo fashion.

Women, on the other hand, have always had feelings, and it's unusual to read about a woman's feelings as if it's something new.

A memorable example of this is Mr. Knightley in Emma by Jane Austen. This male character ends up marrying Emma, who wasn't interested in him for the majority of the story because, although they were friends, Mr. Knightley behaved like an emotionally unavailable uncle towards her.

Based on his actions, there was no way Mr. Knightley was in the picture, let alone in love with Emma all that time.

Of course it was a beautiful happily ever after, and I'm exaggerating the pointlessness of Mr. Knightly's expression of emotions or lack thereof... BUT

This is how most men in books or in reality show up in society: as unbothered, nonchalant individuals that women should like in response to either harassment, or without any explicit show of interest, just because they exist as men 🙄

Since writing about women's feelings has been overdone, it's now difficult for a writer to write a woman in her voice, describing how she feels in a way that's not soapy. Hence, the stress of getting it right increases significantly.

Even as a female writer, writing from a man's perspective feels more rewarding because you can just write normal human emotions and they'll still appear as special because men have been written as robots for a long time, and it's like saying to them, "I see you."

12 reasons to read more than you normally would this year

2022 has been the year that I hoped 2021 would be but wasn't, so I'm hoping next year will be even better, if not the same.

There are a few hours left before the new year, and in this thread, I'll share 5 key learnings from 2022 that I believe will help you prepare for 2023:

1. Mind your business as if you're getting paid to do it—it's the secret sauce to happiness!

Never letting other people's lives occupy an important portion of your mind gives you more time to invest in becoming a better you.

2. Don't let fear stop you; consider imposter syndrome as a form of fear.

You'll do it scared and succeed once you've overcome fear (meaning you're no longer overcome by it), and it'll be the best feeling ever.

3. Give yourself permission to have good things; embracing the good really changes you.

Say yes to whatever you thought you didn't deserve, and give yourself a break.

4. Set goals for yourself, or else other people will set them for you.

The recipe for a life of regret is to live your life on someone else's terms (aka people-pleasing).

Define what success means for you and work towards achieving it for YOU.

5. Be content, but learn well so you can grow; this requires discipline and teachability.

Undisciplined people never learn; they repeat the same cycles over and over until they get disciplined enough to make progress.

Unteachable people think they know it all and

hoard information they think is too precious.

But if you want to grow, you need to practice what you learn until it becomes knowledge, because information is just that—information, but you gain knowledge through experience.

Don't be an encyclopaedia of useless information!

5 key learnings from 2022 that can help you prepare for the new year

AI writers are good for people who need to consistently post fresh content to meet their content goals.

But here are 4 things I learned from experience that I think AI will take away from new writers who want to create meaningful and helpful content in the coming months:

1. By cutting down the time it takes to learn the rules of writing before actually writing, AI takes away an important aspect of honing your writing skills, which is practice.

When I started writing seriously in 2020, my main problem wasn't coming up with ideas or even writing them down in a document. My problem was grammar, flow, pacing, dialog for fiction, etc., which I learned from other writers and course creators and have been practicing since.

Most experienced writers will tell you that it doesn't take a genius to know that writing with good grammar takes years of practice to accomplish, and AI reduces the amount of practice you get from writing a lot.

2. AI fumbles the writing process.

Normally, you write such crap that you spend more time editing and even involving others, such as editors and proofreaders, to make your work perfect. That's the beauty of the writing process, which AI messes up by emphasizing speed over skill

3. You might need more fact-checking than usual.

Most people don't know how to conduct research before writing, and AI doesn't always give the correct information. AI will scour the internet for existing content on your subject before rearranging it arbitrarily in your results.

Often, AI-written content won't be plagiarized, but it won't be accurate either. And if you didn't sufficiently research your topic beforehand, you wouldn't know which part isn't correct. You'd end up with a misleading final draft, which would be pointed out during fact-checking.

4. "But writing is rewriting," they say.

Have fun rewriting something that you didn't write in the first place. Unlike rewriting your own work, having to rewrite AI-generated content can be annoying. You're more like an editor now, good job 🫡
