Your daily reminder that the WEF is mentally unsound. In late 2017, they stated that by 2020 Bitcoin would consume ALL of the world's energy. Sauce: weforum.org/agenda/2017/12/bitcoin-consume-more-power-than-world-2020/ To be clear, energy consumption is not bad. But let's get a clear picture of things! πŸ‘‡πŸ»πŸ§΅
Here is how Bitcoin's energy use compares to some other important sources of energy consumption in the year 2020. With a total of ~62TWh, Bitcoin mining uses slightly less energy than domestic tumble dryers and only a fraction of the energy used by American Christmas lights.
Zooming out, we see that Bitcoin mining uses only 0.04% of all energy consumed globally. 4 bips! These are rookie numbers!
In the future, humanity will climb the Kardashev scale and officially become a Type 1 civilization by increasing its energy production 15x. I wouldn't be surprised to see Bitcoin mining rise to be 20% of all energy usage.
In conclusion, while the WEF continues to prove itself to be severely deficient in the ways of neuronal processing, it is true that someday Bitcoin's energy use will surpass the totality of global energy use in 2020.
