Why Poker Hand Analysis Is Bullshit, And How the Best Players Are Actually Winning
Imagine if most of the hand analysis in the entire history of poker was actually bullshit. Not useless, just thoroughly covered in bullshit. The type of bullshit that helps people believe they know more than they do. And makes it easier for them to look smarter too.
I've coached over 1000 poker players. Met a lot of different thinkers. Heard a lot of different thought processes. The truth is that when the heat is on, their decisions boil down to this:
*What they already wanted to do at an emotional level* And they will wrap that around 2 things: 1. How they think their opponent plays. 2. How they think their own range should function.
From there they arrive at the moment of choice. "Ah, probably just another mixed strategy." Then suddenly one last thought falls out of the sky. The scales are tipped..
And voila. A perfect cocktail of bullshit that helps them justify whatever action they prefer. Add it to the pile.
A lot of players ask: "Is it safe to blindly take hand advice from winning pros?" Yes, but only if you understand the skill set that provides them with the bulk of their edge: Risk tolerance.
Quick upgrade: The current poker market rewards pros who have a high risk tolerance. That means it rewards pros who fight hard for pots. Picture all your favorite heroes.. Bet they don't like to fold.
That's not a permission slip to start recklessly hurling money into the pot. It's just to help you become aware: A high risk tolerance calibrated to statistical pool trends has always been the alpha position in the market. Always.
Let's recap: Millions of poker thoughts per day are sent out into the ether. Disguising themselves as logic in order to deal with confusing hands. All building toward whatever action already felt most comfortable. Please take a long moment. 🤔
Most poker players have not had that moment. The one where you step out of the pile of bullshit you've been covered in and stare back at it. Only to realize what happened: Fear lured you in a long time ago. Denial held you there.
Welcome back. TL;DR: -Poker hand analysis is covered in bullshit. -People act in the direction that feels most comfortable. -High risk tolerance is the alpha skillset. -The pile of shit is large. -Denial keeps people from changing.
I run a free Discord channel that helps poker players recognize bullshit, resolve emotion, and rebuild their thought processes in a reliable, data-driven way. Come join us: discord.gg/FxS8BRXvqY
