After I posted the tweet below, I started writing a MONTH of content at a time. Here's how: - Pick a topic to write about for Monday. - On Monday, instead of writing 1 post, write 5 posts. - Schedule them to run for the next 5 Mondays. - Repeat this process each day for a week. twitter.com/jaylance/status/1624657972604575744?s=20
When I told a few friends about this system they asked: Q: Doesn't that just make your writing 5 times harder for a week? A: Once I decide on a topic and find the flow state, I find it's about the same amount of work to write 1 post as 5 posts (or even more) at a time.
Q: Won't doing this make your posts boring and repetitive? A: Nope! I'm "batch writing" for speed on a handful of related topics, and then posting my writing slowly over a month or more. Also, folks aren't THAT focused on me, so they just don't notice!
Q: Does this make it more difficult because you're not writing every day? A: The goal isn't to write for a week, and take a month off! I still write every day. The freedom this gives me is to write longer content that doesn't live on Twitter.
Q: Won't you run out of ideas? A: I haven't yet! That said... writing on the internet isn't about inventing something brand new every single time I write... It's about expanding on a handful of topics and finding new ways to write about them over time.
Q: What happens if you want to write about something else once everything is scheduled? A: Fortunately UN-scheduling is easy, so if I want to write something in the moment (which seems to happen a couple times a week when I have an idea pop into my head), its simple to do that!
A couple additional thoughts: ✅ This probably won't work as well if you don't have a niche you're focusing on yet. Find your niche first, then automate. ✅ I use metrics to help me find out what is worth expanding on... which is how my daily writing is becoming a book!
