I and a million other Top Boy fans got hooked at first read, here are 4 reasons why

[A lesson for copywriters]

ICYMI

Top Boy is a British crime TV series, and its final season, 'No Loose Ends,' is now streaming on Netflix

As part of their marketing campaign, the team unleashed their creativity to craft this compelling copy

Their message was very simple

Yet powerful enough to hook an average fan who believes he/she is a top boy or girl

It served as an intriguing tease to something the fans weren't prepared for…enough with the preamble; let's get to it already

1.  Character empathy

As viewers, we became attached to the major characters of the series

Alongside their struggles

(from Dushane to Jamie, Sully, Modie, etc)

This copy tends to evoke empathy and anticipation for what's next in their stories

Ex: Jamie's death—what's next?

2. The series has evolving storylines

The copy, again, hints at the idea of each character's time in the spotlight

This has been a crucial aspect of the series. So far, every major character has had a moment of significance

Time for character development? Find out!

3. The rise or fall of major characters comes with a shift in power/leadership or conflict in the TV crime drama

It introduces suspense and speculation

The copy piqued viewers' curiosity about the direction of the plot and left them with the question “What should we expect?”

4. Realism

Top Boy is known for its realistic portrayal of urban life and the fuuiid trade (drug trade)

The copy reflects on the two harsh realities faced by characters in their pursuit of power and survival

As a copywriter, what lessons did I learn from all of this?

1.  Creating impact with your copy is easy when you emphasize key themes and narratives

Example: A copy for CeraVe cream should mirror the product's narrative of providing deep hydration and skin barrier support

2. Copy is a language of sales

But do not be too salesy with yours

Imagine reading a copy that gives off a “buy me, buy now” impression

Instead, sell emotions

Why? ‘Cause 73% of copies that connect an audience on a personal and emotional level have proven to be more effective

3. Leave room for curiosity

Provide a hint or teaser to pique interest. This will make the reader eager to learn more

Show. Don't tell

4.  KIS — Keep It Simple

There's no universal rule to writing compelling copy but it's best you keep it simple

“Make it simple. Make it memorable. Make it inviting to look at. Make it fun to read.” — Leo Burnett

Tips on Copywriting (Inspiration from Top Boy)

I started community management and moderation in Q4 last year.

This year, I have managed and implemented strategies that helped me grow a community from 100 to 3750 organic members in 4 months.

Here are 7 skills that played a huge role in this growth success: 

Community management is a hard skill, but it only gets easier when combined with the strong interpersonal and leadership skills I'm about to cover in this thread.

Please take note: I'll be referring to community managers as CMs.

1.  Self-awareness

Being self-aware is an interpersonal skill and not everyone has it.

In this context, it means understanding your motivation and motives towards the role. Before applying to join a project team as a CM, make sure it's a team you'll love to join.

Be plain with your motive, and make sure it's something you will do with a lot of fun.

This extends to the project.

What do I mean? It's crucial that you are fully aware and understand what the project is all about. 

By doing so, you will know how to represent the project.

2.  Communication

This is one of the most essential interpersonal skills for CMs.

It has helped me convey information clearly from the development team to the community members on multiple occasions.

From announcements and major updates to facilitating engagement, etc.

Communication is the backbone of a CM in effectively managing and growing an online community. 

This is your most powerful tool as a CM. And rust me, with this tool you can turn community members into brand advocates.

3. Conflict resolution

In her words, Anaïs Nin the French-American writer said:

"We don't see things as they are; we see them as we are.”

This spans every aspect of life.

Subjective perception is a thing, especially in a space like ours.

Over the past months, I've learned that individual biases have an impact on how members perceive events.

This can lead to conflicts between members which is bad for growth.

Your ability as a CM to mitigate these conflicts is very important.

4.  Handling ambiguity

Ambiguity refers to situations where problems or events arise with insufficient or unclear details, which result in uncertainties.

Think of a Blocker bug during an NFT mint, a core team member leaving the project, or the Discord server being hijacked.

In times like this, the community will look up to the team.

And as a CM, you are part of the team and it is your responsibility to manage the situation and make the uncertainties known by being transparent with the situation and the information you provide.

5.  Influencing without Authority

For most projects, your responsibility may extend to managing both a team of moderators and members.

Strive to create an environment where these people should look back and ask “What will the admin/CM do in this case?” when you're not there.

6.  Emotional Intelligence

This is base of human interaction and relationship building.

Your community is made up of people with similar values with a stake in the team’s cause. They're not commodities or customers. 

Manage and engage with empathy.

Read the room.

Take observations.

Know when to bring up sensitive topics for engagement.

Take note of their needs and pain points and understand them.

This way, you can create more relevant strategies and community initiatives to help move the affairs of the community forward.

7.  Community Empowerment

We all enjoy being heard and appreciated for our efforts and contributions, be it in our workplaces, support groups, etc.

It empowers us to do even more.

The same thing can be seen in online communities.

Let your members contribute to decisions that will help shape the project. Listen when they speak, ask questions, and implement their suggestions.

Co-create initiatives with them and support their cause.

This fosters a sense of ownership, and involvement, among them.

A new form of content with Twitter spaces

Over the weekend, I went on TikTok to learn about the Chinese economy. 

I found this creator that said something I will never forget.

He said the reason the Chinese are doing so well in different sectors is not because they're so amazing.

It is because they practice “Fargin.”

“Fargin” is a Yiddish word that is used to convey the concept of feeling genuine happiness or joy for someone else's success or good fortune.

Now here is how fargin has promoted a supportive environment conducive to growth and innovation in China:

Chinese founders receive backings from their government. That is, founders who are ready to take initiative and risk.

Not founders who have figured everything out, no.

They just need you to be teachable and be ready to take constructive criticism.

This has helped China to create an environment that nurtures talent, supports entrepreneurship, and fosters a culture of collaboration and growth.

Why Chinese founders dominate their niche markets

Even with a shitty product, you can dominate the market with good marketing and branding.

But when you don't understand the distinction and roles both play in your business, you'll have a problem.

Here's what I mean: ↓🧵

The easiest way to explain this is with a story. Let's get to it:

In July last year, I went to grab a refill of oats from the store when I met this girl. A very pretty girl with stunning eyes.

Intrigued, I approached her and struck up a conversation.

It turns out she’s a gym rat who was only there to buy groceries and hurry home. Regardless, we spoke for a few minutes. The attendant checked her out, and I got her number and headed home as well.

The conversation continued on the phone.

The vibe was solid, and the synergy was there. Her energy was unmatched compared to the other girls I had met before then.

So, after some weeks of talking, I asked her to go on a date with me.

Yes! She agreed.

But let's cut the story here for now.

You must be wondering what this story has to do with marketing and branding.

But here's the catch: depending on the lens you're looking through, everything around us is driven by these two things—branding and marketing.


Here are the elements of branding and marketing in that story:

In just a few minutes of our conversation in that store, I had known what she does and what she was most passionate about and became genuinely interested.

This is no different from the market research process.

Who is your target market?

What do they do?

What problems do they have, and how will your solution (product) solve them?

These questions will help you determine the most effective way to present your message to them.


The talking stage represents AWARENESS.

If I hadn't approached her in that store, she wouldn't have known a cool guy like me existed.

This is the same thing as saying you have the best product in the world when nobody knows about it.

See?

Also, do not forget, if done right, marketing is a two-way street.

Her awareness of who I am during our interaction sparked a desire for her to get to know more about me.

And here's where branding came in to make the work easy.

By branding, I mean the narrative and persona that I have built for myself during the talking stages.

It played a pivotal role in shaping her perception of me.

I'm talking about my communication style, authenticity, reputation, values, interests, and aura.

For a business, the brand elements will be it's:

• Identity
•Messaging
•Values
•Reputation
•Quality
•Experience

When I said you can dominate the market even with a shitty product, here is what I meant in terms of branding and marketing:

Branding is all about creating a perception of yourself in someone's mind.

It's all about creating something that will be missed if it were all gone.

Like what you feel about Coca-Cola and Macdonald's. BAYC, Apple products, and even the character of Peter Parker as spider man.

The goal of marketing is to attract, engage, and retain customers.

And to attract customers, marketing Ieverages the brand identity and story of a business to put a message that resonates in front of its target audience.

Understanding branding and marketing

The biggest financial firms in the world are filing applications for spot Bitcoin ETFs.

Yet, many people are not aware of the implications and how ETFs work. Read this and be prepared for what's coming:

Let's get into it:

1. An ETF (Exchange-Traded Fund) is a form of pooled investment security that operates like a mutual fund.

They are used to track the performance of an asset or an entire stock market index and can be bought and sold on stock exchanges like normal stocks.

Keep in mind that:

Security here refers to a tradable financial instrument that represents ownership, a financial interest, or a claim on an underlying asset or entity. 

It could be in the form of stocks, bonds, derivatives, or other financial instruments.

Also, a mutual fund is a special savings or investment account that many people can put their money into.

Take it like a big pool of money collected from 100 people to invest in different things at once instead of each person choosing individual investments.

2. There are different types of ETFs but just to mention a few, there are:

- Bond ETFs
- Stock ETFs
- Inverse ETFs
- Industry ETFs
- Currency ETFs
- Commodity ETFs

The last on this list is the one behind the buzz: Bitcoin ETFs.

Now, before we rush into the reasons behind the sudden interest in Bitcoin ETFs and Blackrock's filing, let's talk about digital assets as an asset class.

Let's see what makes an asset digital and what doesn't. And the new class of digital assets; based on blockchain technology.

3. A digital asset is anything that is created, stored, and exists in a digital or electronic format.

It can be a photo, document, video, metadata, book, etc.

But for it to be considered an asset, it must have the potential to create value.

For example:

Bitcoin is known as a store of value *primarily due to:
 
• Its limited supply of 21M coins.

• Its monetary policy is set in stone     (immutability)

• Market demand and adoption by businesses and institutions for payments and other transactions.

Alongside cryptocurrencies, here are other assets based on blockchain technology that are classified as new digital assets:

• NFTs
• Tokens
• Security Tokens
• Tokenized Assets
• Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs)

4. Now, why the sudden interest in Bitcoin ETFs?

Through the thick and thin, with the bans and lawsuits, you can agree with me that nothing has stopped cryptocurrency as an asset class from gaining traction.

There has been a growing interest in what it is and how it works.

On June 21

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, during his testimony before the House Financial Services Committee, acknowledged this growing interest in digital assets and their potential as a new asset class.

Highlighting the Fed's stance on the integration of digital assets.

With more mainstream popularity than ever, many non-crypto people are now keen on buying Bitcoin.

But the technicalities of buying and holding Bitcoin are still confusing to these folks.

Plus, some still consider cryptocurrencies a risky bet due to the risk involved.

5. On Blackrock:

A Bitcoin ETF is managed by a firm that buys and holds the actual Bitcoin through a custody account.

This is where Blackrock, comes in. But who are they? What is their stance on Bitcoin and digital assets?

Other major institutional firms have also filed for a spot in Bitcoin ETFs.

This includes Fidelity with $4.5trn AUM, NYC-based firm, WisdomTree with Invesco reactivating their application.

Valkyrie funds. And ARK amending their 19b-4 for spot Bitcoin ETF.

Implications: What do all these mean?

The approval of Bitcoin ETF by the SEC will bring Bitcoin to Wall Street

That means a new level of adoption and trading opportunities

It will be traded in the same places as Tesla stock, bonds, gold, oil, or any other traditional asset.

Although the concept of Bitcoin ETFs is not new, filings for spot Bitcoin ETFs have consistently faced rejections from the U.S. SEC over the years.

The Winklevoss twins through the Winklevoss Bitcoin Trust were the first to file for a Bitcoin ETF proposal back in 2013.

Many believe this time will be different with the speculation that it would be a huge boost to the price of Bitcoin.

1. Brand recognition: Yuga has unlocked all it takes to maintain an unbeatable IP within the gaming.

They are already well established and widely known—from a single pfp project back in June 2021 to acquiring and owning conglomerates of projects.

Their ecosystem keeps expanding and has just hit a milestone of 300 projects.

3. More collaborative expansion: depending on the success of LoTM—the new game, they may decide to form partnerships with other gaming powerhouses...

which may want to leverage their IP to create unique gaming experiences.

However, going back to the initial questions, here's all it takes to mess all this up:

How powerful is Yuga Labs' IP?

The state of quality of products/projects in the space is slowly dying even before the mass adoption that we preach about. 

A lot of projects, products, and services from 2021 have died a natural death because no one uses them again.

Founders, hear me out:

Quality is dying because priorities are not being given to what truly matters during the development phases. 

Instead of spending time worrying about external factors like partnerships, marketing, etc, you should make sure:

1. The product meets the requirements and expectations

Here's why:

Once the product meets its documented standards and requirements, users' expectations are met.

This makes it easier to communicate its value, form partnerships, and develop effective marketing strategies that resonate with the target market. 

2. Build what people want to use not what you want people to use

Having innovative ideas and being able to bring them to life through product development is very commendable.

But what is the essence if it is not solving a problem? 

Understand that your desires and that of your users may be different. 

Adopt a design or development approach that addresses their desires, not yours.

That's one way to keep them coming back.

You wouldn’t want to be that founder that puts in all the time and effort to build something nobody is going to use after a couple of interactions.

Do not deviate from requirements and what the market wants because their continued use and satisfaction are the measure of quality.

Your content should either educate, entertain, empower or engage your audience.

Give them a reason to stop scrolling through their Twitter feeds

• Double down on storytelling

Naturally, as humans, we love stories. 

Anything that keeps us glued!

Storytelling is a powerful tool that captivates our attention and retains it

Use stories and analogies that flow with the message to keep your audience engaged

The purpose of storytelling is to create emotional connection - a powerful driver of human behaviour

Attention is built when your audience is emotionally connected to your piece: 

• Be Authentic

Do not be manipulative 

Neither should you evoke emotions solely for attention-grabbing purposes.

Cook your content as that wholesome, home-cooked meal - be genuine, and authentic. 

Avoid artificial additives.

Authenticity sells not manipulation

• Test and optimize

Don't stop testing till you find out what brings you that engagement 

Use analytic tools to find out what is working and what to ditch 

Make adjustments accordingly and keep those fire content comin
