1/4 In the end, it's very simple:
The US contributes ~20% of the WHO budget, China only a fraction of that (less than Nigeria for 2020-2023, in voluntary contributions - see if you can find China in the graph below).
And unfortunately, China was able to get the WHO to kowtow thanks to
(1) Tedros' right arm (Schwartländer, suitably German in that role), and
2/4 (2) the WHO total incapacity to show some spine when China started denying it access to the ground.
Add to this some completely unnecessary bad choices (such as doing key interviews with a journalist involved in Chinese forced confessions, as a way to message the Chinese government) and you get a ticking time-bomb.
3/4 Typically, China gets an awful lot of return for a small investment and about zero cooperation when it matters most, by playing the old game of access to 1 bln people.
That's wrong.
