1/4 In the end, it's very simple: The US contributes ~20% of the WHO budget, China only a fraction of that (less than Nigeria for 2020-2023, in voluntary contributions - see if you can find China in the graph below). And unfortunately, China was able to get the WHO to kowtow thanks to (1) Tedros' right arm (Schwartländer, suitably German in that role), and
2/4 (2) the WHO total incapacity to show some spine when China started denying it access to the ground. Add to this some completely unnecessary bad choices (such as doing key interviews with a journalist involved in Chinese forced confessions, as a way to message the Chinese government) and you get a ticking time-bomb.
3/4 Typically, China gets an awful lot of return for a small investment and about zero cooperation when it matters most, by playing the old game of access to 1 bln people. That's wrong. x.com/gdemaneuf/status/1881886921787682944
4/4 I am politically more of a centrist (~German social democrat), but that does not blind me in taking the US for some kind of sugar daddy that one can rely on financially, while sleeping left and right and poking fun at it. The WHO needs to change. gillesdemaneuf.medium.com/summary-proximal-origin-a-tragicomedy-of-our-times-1ed5b4dae506
