2/13 First, Lipkin explains that he handles sources in China, such as Gao, which talk to him off the record.
He explains further:
"My ability to operate and actually protect you, honestly, and work around the world is no different than a journalist who has to protect sources."

"I am your best link to China. You don't want to lose me there. So it's very important that this not go beyond this room or I won't be able to operate, and then we'll have no visibility into China."

Then notice how he was sent to China with a bunch of questions to ask, in January 2020.

BTW another interesting character that was in Wuhan at the time was Michael Callahan (17 to 28 Jan), who is as much intel and CTR (Cooperative Threat Reduction) as one can get.
