I have been trying OmniFocus again after being an avid Things user for the past ~10 years, and wow, I love the flexibility and more powerful features, even if the UI is a bit clunky and old-fashioned.

I distinctly remember not understanding the need for all this complexity—projects, tags, defer dates, due dates, custom perspectives—back when I first tried it.

Now, with a much more complex life, running multiple work and personal projects and juggling many responsibilities, I can totally see the value of a more powerful tool. It allows me to see just what I need at the moment and review things effortlessly on a schedule.

Things, it has been a great 10 years, but I need more power for now! See you at the next update!

I have been very satisfied with this new workflow for reading books:

• I highlight copiously on my Kindle.
• I sync the highlights to @obsdmd via this plugin: https://github.com/hadynz/obsidian-kindle-plugin

When I am done reading the book, I highlight the highlights and summarize the main takeaways in my own voice (for retention).

I organize everything by year to keep a nice archive of what I have read.

This approach is quite low-effort compared to other methods I've tried, such as taking notes after reading each chapter, which feels too much like work.

I may eventually choose to share all of this on a dedicated page on my website.

I believe there's merit to the concept of Obsidian serving as your personal life/knowledge CMS, allowing you to reveal select portions to the rest of the world.

Really impressed with the last 12 months of @typefullyapp growth

Net negative MRR churn rate is the holy grail of SaaS.

It's important because it lets you escape gravity. 

When selling subscriptions, you always reach a plateau.

When the number of new subscribers = the number of churned customers over a given period, you stop growing.

How do you escape that?

You escape it by selling more to existing customers → expansion revenue → net negative MRR churn.

It increases the value of acquiring every single customer. They will buy repeatedly and offset the MRR lost by churning customers.

👨‍💻 Just converted @typefullyapp to @turborepo. 

All the code now lives on a monorepo: main @nextjs webapp, private UI components library, and configuration files.

1️⃣ Create new libraries by adding a folder to your project. This will make wonders for code reuse.

If we ever make a mobile React Native app, we will be able to easily extract business logic and just rewrite the UI. {{ img:fde3d1 }}

2️⃣ Can iterate on UI components library live with hot reload on the main NextJS app.

Major one as it allows us to iterate faster 🔥 

3️⃣ Improved build times thanks to (remote) caching.

We recently switched from Notion and haven't felt this organized as a team in a while.

Here's why 🧵

What's the job of project management software?

IMHO: help a team move forward on projects, with clear priorities, without stepping on each other toes, minimizing communication overhead.

In other words, it should facilitate *alignment* 🤝

With Notion, we worked in our own silos (filtered lists of tasks), losing sight of the bigger picture and constantly having to check in with each other to know where things were at.

It was too extensible. We constantly tweaked it, never getting it 100% right. 

Once you set Basecamp up, the home page lists all the projects you have going on + the team HQ {{ img:536a61 }}

On that same page, you get a calendar, visible to the whole team based on the projects everyone is on {{ img:ab5161 }}

This is what a project looks like inside:

- Message Board (threaded conversations)
- To-dos (a single glorious list)
- Docs
- Team chat (free-form)
- Schedule (stuff here ends up in the calendar)
- Automatic check-ins (questions you can ask the team at regular intervals) {{ img:d6500e }}

Some of these tools are really bare-bones compared to modern alternatives (Docs < Notion, Chat < Discord).

That being said, the whole is more of the sum of its parts. They integrate and work really well together.

The unified list of to-dos is my favorite part of Basecamp.

You can really get a sense of where a project is by looking at it vs. a 3-level hierarchy of kanban/tasks/docs in Notion. {{ img:208d2d }}

You also get many visual cues of what the allocated time for the project is (the "appetite" for it). {{ img:006780 }}

The Activity below each project is another favorite of mine. It shows what everyone is up to in terms of tasks/docs created and done. 

It notifies you when you are involved in a task (created it or commented on it). {{ img:0129e6 }}

With this setup, it's realistic to run the company with very few meetings.

Even our 2 times/week standups seem less and less useful.

Writing this thread felt like an ode to opinionated software and as a reminder to be bolder in our own product decisions.
