Airport taxiways are getting complex as they grow in size. Pilots have an increased workload on ground which could result in entering an incorrect taxiway or even a rwy incursion.
On-Board Airport Navigation System (OANS) helps reduce errors in surface navigation.
A 🧵 on OANS
The OANS system, developed in conjunction with Thales, presents pilots with an overview map display of the airport apron and taxiways, coupled to a new interactive input device to indicate the aircraft’s location on that map.
The system for the #A320 requires the installation of an Onboard Airport Navigation computer(OANC) in the forward avionics compartment on 91VU. The OANC has a memory card that stores the airport navigation database.
It also requires the installation on a Cursor control device (CCD). This is used for controlling and interacting with the map. The CCD is installed on both the Capt. and the FO’s side.
The OANS is displayed only on the ND in NAV,ARC or PLAN mode with the scale selector in zoom. The airport selection is automatically made as per the flight plan, however can be changed.
OANS was first type-certified for the #A380 in 2006, and in 2013 the system was adapted and certified as an option for both the #A320 and #A330.
