So I just call the #animation done and move on.

I did learn a lot with this one about #b3d, and that's all I wanted to achieve.

Tried to add little resistance when doing the kick as well.

Tried to play around with shape keys as well, but those aren't visible in the video above. Definitely worth to explore more.

So here it is without fancy lights :)

Main takeaways:

I first encountered scripting when I was trying to learn rigging in Maya.

Creating a dozen empty groups for organizing my rig every single time is scary, time-consuming and boring.

Create group, double click, rename, parenting... Blah-blah.

There must be a better way.

That's correct.
It's called scripting.

Automating tasks you are bored with.

But PJ, hold on, I am animating ffs, not rigging!

Sure.

Scripting or coding knowledge will help in multiple ways:

→ automate tasks

→ helps out with animating when no 3rd party tools are allowed (in your job)

→ forces your brain to think logical

→ blueprints\state machines\animation systems are much clearer

→ animate faster

→ support other animators by providing tools

You see?
There are many advantages in learning scripting.

Not to forget:
The dopamine rush you receive.

It saves your precious time, and you can focus on animating.

The best part of it?
It helps you with understanding of what's happening in the engine.

Suddenly all those nodes you're connecting make more sense.

It definitely helps me in my work, knowing at least a little scripting.

Your brain now can think in

→ nested logics
→ conditions
→ overwrites
→ switches
→ variables
→ additives

Basically, your brain is used to problem-solving.

Besides understanding the engine better, you now can create your own tools.

For example, the rig you work with might only have the arm control follow the chest control - but you want it to stay in place, even when rotating the chest.

You can change that by hand.

→ Create locator.
→ Constraint locator to control.
→ Bake animation to locator.
→ Rotate chest freely without changing the arm.
→ Bake animation back to controller.
→ delete locator.

Boring. Annoying. Time-consuming. Fuck that.

Make it a script.
Money saved.

Scripting - Necessary for gameplay animators or not?


Are you animating day in, day out?

You love working with people?
You love solving puzzles?
You love games?

Here's what I learned over the years and what it takes to be a GAMEPLAY animator.

Gameplay #animation goes far beyond JUST animating the characters.

A game is a huge puzzle with millions of pieces, where you are ONE piece of the big entirety.

connect with the surrounding pieces.

Soak in knowledge like a sponge.

Reach out to your coworkers.

Be proactive and talkative.

Provide solutions when asked for.

As a gameplay animator, lots of systems come together at your place, you will encounter issues.

Raise them and let people know about your findings.

Don't hide away.

Provide a description and possible solution to production\quality assurance\coders\designers\riggers etc.

You will NOT solve everything yourself and ultimately burn time = money.

Learnings i made this weekend:

→ Setting up hotkeys improve your Blender experience a LOT 😍

→ Blender is easier to pick up than i thought.

→ Using Blender Video Sequence Editor to edit reference.

→ Blenders 3d cursor can help animating complex motions without complex rigs at hand (like shifting rotation pivots around).

→ Quaternion rotations are scary (to me) and i still like Euler rotations more. Will continue investigating and getting comfy with them though.

→ I gotta spent more time in Blender.

You found reference. Now step 2.
Editing.

No - you don't need Adobe Premiere, or Davinci Resolve or some other top notch editing software.

We stay home and just use:
Blender Video Sequence Editor.

SHIFT + F8 will bring it up in your active panel.

You can also switch the entire layout, like in the image.

1) Click the plus symbol in the tabs section.
2) Hit Video Editing.
3) Hit Video Editing again.

Nice. Now you're set for editing. :)

You'll now see:
sequencer area at the bottom.
previewer in top right panel.
file browser in top left panel.

Since we're blenimators, let's change display from seconds to frames.

Drag video, or image sequence from the file browser to the sequencer area.

Or press SHIFT + A there to bring up the menu and choose "Movie" or "Image Sequence". Both will result in your first strip here (a video might have an audio strip as well).

G - for moving strips.

X - delete strips.

K - for 'cutting' strips. This does duplicate the strip in the background.

SHIFT K - This is more the cut function you might know from other softwares.

SHIFT S - Snap strip to cursor.

Try turning on 'Offsets' in the overlay options in top right corner.

It shows you what's happening to your strip when cutting with K or SHIFT K.

When clicking (and holding) with right mouse button on the front or end bar in your strip, you can adjust the strips duration.
Alternatively, right click them and press G.

The N panel on the right, displays some more options to edit your strips.

Here you can change the strips position, scale, rotation, mirror or crop it etc. Basically it contains all options\adjustments to your strip.

Once happy with your edits, switch to the properties panel (SHIFT F12) or, if you're using the Video Editing layout, in the top right area.

Adjust the frame rate, the frame range and the output path.
Basically you're setting up how you want to save your video.
