Where did the Saxons come from? Mainly from the North Sea coast, which included modern-day Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, and France. They came from three major Germanic tribes: the Saxons, the Angles, and the Jutes. #AngloSaxons
3 main German tribes: The #Saxons, #Angles, and #Jutes were the three most powerful #Germanic tribes, according to the eighth-century Northumbrian monk #Bede. These tribes were crucial to the invasion and colonization of #Britain
“They came from three most powerful Germanic tribes, the Saxons, the Angles, and the Jutes. Of Jutish origin are the people of Kent and of the Isle of Wight, and the part of the kingdom of Wessex opposite the Isle of Wight, still called the nation of the Jutes.
From the Saxon land, that is the place which is now called Old Saxony, came the East Saxons, the South Saxons, and the West Saxons.
From Anglian land, between the Jutes and Saxons, came the East Angles, Middle Angles, Mercians, Northumbrian peoples, and other Anglian groups” Bede - Ecclesiastical History of the English People
The invasion united a fierce coalition of tribes: Frisians, Rugians, Danes, Huns, Old Saxons, and Boructuari.
These tribes contributed to the colonization of northern Europe, particularly Britain. It's worth noting that there were possibly other tribes involved, but little evidence to say for certain. #EuropeanHistory #WorldHistory #VikingAge
