💡 On the delight of software that just works. 

Software, as you might already know is fragile. Fragilie as in if you forget one semicolon ";" that C or Java program might not compile. same with if ur dependencies suddenly introduce breaking changes without u pinning ur version.

🤝 It requires a lot of convention and coordination to make software works. That's why some software can rot, if its not maintained, especially in today's hyperconnected world. Compare to let say physical tool, the hammer can rot, but it still looks like a hammer 🔨.

🚗 Or you can look at car, it can degrade, rusty if you let it not run for 5 years but you can restore it. But with software, if you have only the source code, it might not run/compiled today. 

🪨 That's why I always amazed with things that just works. Espcially software that is old, but always run rock solid when we use it. Today I have this experience with Kubernetes, Helm and Helmfile, surprisingly enough they're very robust;

🌳 Another tech I admire is @elmlang, a simple language for writing UI in the browswer that is amazingly rock solid despite not that many update. Elm compiler receive no update for the last 10 months, & still works really well.  Same with Elm core that is not changed for 3 years.

The Fragility of Software

Recently I got hooked into olympics after watching Yusuf Dikeç impressive gearless performance in shooting olympics. Which pull me to the other games including Neeraj Chopra vs Arshad Nadeem saga; & also Indonesian athletes like Rizki Juniansyah; & now N. Akmal. Some lessons 👇

First of all, Dikeç achievements shows that character win. In a very competitive game like olympics or business a cool headed mind can be the different between winning and losing. With the right talent, characters trumps tools & gears.

Even when you're not the 1st, characters become memable, because we want to be like him.

That's what I learned from Dikeç. The coolest cucumber 🥒 can be the coldest killer 🔫.

Next is the observations on the "resting". There's one thing in common between Chopra (javelin), Juniansyah (wl 71kg) and Wenwen (wl 81+kg). They are all just undergo some kind of break. Juniansyah undergo a surgery and take a 6-months break, similar with Chopra and Wenwen. But..

It is impressive that all performing really well in this olympic. Juniansyah won the gold medal in wl 71kg, & along the way beating his team mate and competitor Erwin Abdullah who was the best in the world in his class. He beat his teammate with just 2 weeks training postrecovery

And Chopra . It's only one succesful throw, and he tried to push his limit, to try to beat Nadeem. V impressive for athlete who just make his comeback after a break.

It is the time when I realize that in this world-class situations, small things can make a huge different between winning and losing, and between getting gold vs silver or bronze.

Wenwen also make an amazing comeback which leads her now claiming another olympic gold medals today. Same with Chopra while he's only got Silver, his one successful throw made him a Silver medal.

- first you want to be the best in your country
- then you want to qualified for olympic
- then you want to be in olympic final
- then you want to got medal 🏅
- then you want to got gold medal 🥇
- then you want to break world record 🎉

And in the case of Akmal, the last game Indonesia participated in this  Olympic, I learned that even between the best there's spectrum

- you first aim for gold
- if not aim for silver
- if not aim for bronze
- if not aim for top 5
- aim for top 10
- at least succesful lift

It's always been inpiring if you work among the best, even though you're not in the top of the spectrum, you are inspired. And if you're just homie or  geek like me the internet is another stage that you can be the best. Either as marketer, tech builder, indie hacker, u name it.

This whole thread is just a reflection for me watching my country's team in the olympics and how they compete with other top tier ahtletes. If there's any inaccurate info please correct it.

Character Wins: Lessons from Olympics

How to get the most of your hackathon. Not unserious thread 🪡

So last week I hack for the @auroraisnear x @encodeclub hackathon. Here's what I do to get the most of the hackathon and not get depleted but get more energy 👇👇👇

1/ Study the sponsor tech that you like. In my case it was @NEARProtocol's BOS (Blockchain OS). I found it fascinating because it is the holy grail of composability. More than ever I not get discourage by amount of code I should code to integrate frontend with my Smart Contract.

2/ Hack your way until it clicks. During this hackathon I got several roadblocks. From installing the CLI that has no @MacHomebrew package so I created it https://github.com/bos-cli-rs/bos-cli-rs/pull/52. I don't know about how Homebrew formula works, but I managed to create the package after all.

3/ Not stopping there I realized there are two CLI not one for the local BOS development. So I create another Homebrew package for the other one https://github.com/near/bos-loader/pull/6.

4/ I also found things that might be a bug in the tech that NEAR BOS have. So I created two others issues in their GitHub

By creating this issue I want to give them an honest feedback and input as a developer that uses their pltfm.

5/ I also spot issue with their docs, so I updated that as well https://github.com/near/docs/pull/1417 - different with other PRs this one has been merged. I'm so happyyy

6/ During hackathon I also found issue with my tooling which is @NxDevTools and I found a middle-ground solution to my problem which doesn't have a long term solution. I'm not hesitate to share it to their github issue e.g. https://github.com/nrwl/nx/issues/8269#issuecomment-1606009411

7/ Lastly don't forget to finally submit your project. Mind was near the deadline, but happy to finally submit it. And yeah I publicly / #buildinpublic share it to Twitter so that I can get feedback.

Getting the Most out of a Hackathon

I'm launching @tryhologram on @ProductHunt @ProductHuntHi last week, it wasn't a very successful launch, but I want to share a couple of insights that I learned. #ProductLaunch #IndieHacker #BuildInPublic

A serious thread 🧵

1) If you're considering launching a product to Product Hunt, you're onto something. Product Hunt is a good start if you don't have any distribution e.g. social media following, newsletter subscriber, etc. It provides you with (I would say) medium-to-high quality traffic.

2) Be prepared. If you're new to Product Hunt make sure you obsessed with every detail that Product Hunt asked, from video, first comment, product description, team member, preview image, teaser image, etc. Basically we want to increase every chance people interested in our app.

3) Consider to support each other, I know there are lots of creator in Product Hunt that is support each other and even reach out to us via LinkedIn after we launched our product. Basically they build hype to other creators/founders even before the launch.

4) From our experience with @tryhologram it brings more than 400+ views to our app based on our internal metrics. Also 70 upvotes and 17 comments. It is underwhelming tbh, but a good start for indie hacker like us.

5) The thing is the traffic is easily dissipate, so make sure that Product Hunt is not only your main distribution channel. Here's what I have the traffic is almost 20x from 20-ish to 200-ish during launch day and the second day. On the third day it dissipate.

6) As for myself I should do better on the distribution so that I'm not only relying on Product Hunt. It is also inspired me to find similar site or network where I can launch a product and get feedback from peers e.g. founders and creator.

7) I hope I know Product Hunt earlier, because it is not only good for software product launches but also for book, services, etc. I'm considering now to re-launch my mentoring services in Product Hunt.

8) Be kind. Try to response to as much comment as possible, it opens up network and more opportunity. Use the "Award" button as well to highlight comment that is standout.

9) Last but not least obsessed with every detail, be serious because launching in Product Hunt is becoming an art in it self 🙂.
