🔸 Bitcoin Pizza Day ▫️ How the most expensive pizza ever started the Bitcoin revolution. 🧵 Thread #41👇
▫️ tl;dr Laszlo Hanyecz paid 10,000 bitcoin to Jeremy Sturdivant for two Papa John's pizzas on May 22, 2010. That was the first known transaction using bitcoin to buy a good. And it sparked the bitcoin revolution.
▫️ Laszlo Hanyecz was one of the very first Bitcoin miners. Laszlo was born in Jacksonville, Florida, and he works as a developer. On May 18, 2010, Laszlo Hanyecz posted an offer on the @bitcointalk forum to buy pizza with Bitcoin.
▫️ He asked for two pizzas in exchange for bitcoins. With standard toppings like onions, peppers, sausage, mushrooms, tomatoes, pepperoni, and regular cheese pizzas. "No weird fish topping or anything like that"
▫️ A few days later, on May 22, 2010, Hanyecz made a deal with Jeremy Sturdivant aka "Jercos". Jercos received 10,000 BTC from Laszlo in exchange for the pizza he purchased for him. The transaction took place through IRC (Internet Relay Chat).
▫️ Back then, 10,000 bitcoins were worth about $41 while the price of two pizzas was $25. Jeremy sold his 10,000 BTC for $400 shortly after the transaction. In total, Laszlo spent 100,000 BTC on pizza.
▫️ Both Laszlo and Jercos have never regretted the deal. Both have said this in various interviews. 👇 You can find these interviews, and more information in my article on the @skribrnetwork . skribr.io/article/bitcoin-pizza-day/
▫️ Bitcoin Pizza Day The global crypto community celebrates the 22nd of May, the date of this monumental transaction. Laszlo Hanyecz's pizza purchase started the Bitcoin revolution.
