What @RyanTrahan doing on YouTube right now just might shift the future meta, I binged-watch all his videos because they are great.
Here are 8 things that Ryan absolutely nailed with these series
1. The Mission
There's always an overarching mission that Ryan is going for, and that's the 100,000$ charity (spoiler alert, he's already crushed 4x the goal). This actually makes the viewer follow the story more, he's the hero in this story (whether that's intentional or not)
If you use a mission for your video or have any goal for that matter, no matter how small, have a clear pitch for it.
The penny is going extinct
I'm crossing America starting from a penny
to help fundraise 1 mil meals
with 30 yt videos in 30 days
can't get any clearer than that
2. The Challenge
Some may say the donation is the challenge, but the real challenge is getting to MrBeast in 30 days, we don't know if he'll do it, none of what he does is scripted, with a possible exception (mentioned later)
It's not only a challenge but a great one, crossing the US with a penny almost sounds impossible, and it piques interest. "How is he actually going to do that?" It's far from obvious, and it hooks the new viewers in the thumbnail every time
3. Countdown
Adding a countdown, a score or other tracking progress metrics is a great way to add tension, and it can also help the audience to follow the journey along with you.
In Ryan's case, this is the cash counter which is with us throughout the whole series, we follow the triumph and satisfaction of it going up and the tragedy of it going down when it does
4. The Threat
We're constantly reminded about *The Great Reset*, Ryan dreads it but of course, he still wants it to happen at the same for the mission, (see how this is getting intertwined yet?)
It also adds another even more curiosity, how is he going to deal with the setback?
5. Gamification
Ryan has an "Inventory" that he keeps even beyond The Great Reset, it gives consistent progress which makes it more interesting to continue watching despite the reset as things won't be the same, the editing highlights these points to really glue it all together
6. The Game Plan
Every video has a new "Game Plan" these are sub-goals for each day, these sub-goals are always fresh and interesting to watch, this is the part that might be thought through before each day to keep things entertaining
He just kept layering hooks at every level
7. Keeping it Real
Ryan is a humble, and sometimes awkward guy, just like a lot of us watching, it's easy to imagine some confident guy who doesn't bat an eye at all of these challenges to go out and absolutely dominate everything, but Ryan shares every piece of the journey
Now to be wholly awkward and be ok with it is confidence in itself but all this makes this so relatable, and that's really important for the viewer's connection to the story, it's also very empowering to see how he still overcomes those feelings while succeeding at his goals
8. Event of the Day & Side characters
Now, this is some of the best comment engagement strategy I've seen in a while (except for the amazing videos themselves), do you remember Tommy? "Let's go Tommy!" or "Richard is my Hero!"
p.s Am I the only one who suddenly wants McDonald's after these series? I hadn't had some good McNuggets in a long while...
Anyone at @McDonalds reading this? Sponsoring him could be a next-level marketing idea, that's a freebie π
