You can tell a lot about #company or #startup through their #hiring process and principles.
Like most of you - I've been a number of times on both sides of the fence
- hiring and helping to design the hiring process
- or going through hiring discussions myself
and it never stops to amaze me how vast the difference is between the best hiring processes and even those you'd call better ones.
Not to mention that many companies seem to still have a hiring process run as an after-thought... π¦
...rather than as the source of the best-fit colleagues possible.
Even in the age of automated tools, available external agencies and headhunters, advisors and communities - it seems like many are trying to hire without knowing what they actually want and why! π
I'm now in more discussions than typically since I'm looking for an interesting project to join somewhere around the world and I feel like I have to share some of "not so good" practices for others to hopefully avoid
πππ
Before I continue - please just remember - the hiring process is your store-front for future employees! π¨π¨π¨
Why not have at least a clean window? Not to mention how much brand damage this behavior can do in the long run.
Anyway, just some #startup#hiring highlights to avoid:
1/ taking 6 weeks to set up the first call - after the company reaches out to You that they are interested to cooperate
2/ more than 2 months between each stage in the process
3/ want to test You but the test is not ready
4/ want to invite You to their off-site to meet the team but You need to pay for your flight and accom
5/ asking You to promise to keep the team intact if you join; without you actually knowing the team members
6/ saying You will be responsible for growth but adding that they will sometimes tell You how to do it (even though they've never grown or sold anything - yes, this really happens!)
7/ saying You will manage #product teams but You don't need interaction designer(s) and graphic designer since we can outsource them
8/ saying we have #marketing and #sales department, they handle the customer side, you will only work on product management
(this one is painful π cos companies with departments are dead π it's just matter of time β±οΈ)
9/ saying after 6 rounds of talks, we would like to wait with the last round after summer is over, without explanation... why is summer relevant in the hiring process π (not saying it can't be, just explain)
10/ not being transparent about your #VC#funding situation even though the market already knows that promised $$$ hasn't arrived
---
I'll stop here but I'm sure I'll collect some more interesting highlights in the coming weeks, so stay tuned π
