2/10 โ๏ธ ๐ฉ When Cebo first DM'd me cold on Twitter, he had just been forced to terminate his Medical Laboratory Sciences first-degree studies at the Central University Of Technology in the Free State province of South Africa before attending a single class.
3/10 โน๏ธ ๐ง๏ธ Cebo and his family could not afford to keep him in school, despite receiving partial financial support from South Africa's National Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).
4/10 ๐ ๐ฑ After researching Cebo's roots and references - which included meeting his mother, former high school teacher and church pastor - I determined something had to be done to assist him.
5/10 ๐ฟ๐ฆ ๐ท๐ฟ Cebo hails from Tsakane (a township in the East Rand of Gauteng, South Africa) and is the firstborn of four children. (His siblings are aged 11, 13 and 16.) After dropping out of varsity last year, he took up work in construction to raise funds for his studies.
6/10 ๐ฅณ ๐ฅผ He has since secured a place to study Medical Laboratory Sciences at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (@CPUT). He needs financial support to cover school fees (including book and equipment costs) & student residence costs for the first semester of '22.
7/10 ๐ซ ๐ฐ By June/July 2022, Cebo's NSFAS bursary (currently being transferred from the Central University Of Technology to @CPUT) will be reinstated. His family expects that they will be able to supplement any financial gaps from that point.
8/10 ๐ค โ I figure that if we can raise the roughly R45k Cebo needs for the first half of his year of studies, we may as well raise R90k (approx. USD6,2k) for the year and give him & his family a headstart on the next few years he'll spend striving to become a Medical Scientist.
9/10 ๐งฎ ๐ข Here's a breakdown of Cebo's needs:
Tuition Costs (including Student Residence): R73,000
Books and Equipment: R16,700
Professional Registrations (i.e. Health Professions Council of South Africa): R300
