You must do things that make you uncomfortable.
I’m sitting here in a small, hole-in-the-wall (quite literally) place here in Eastern Europe. A small pub.
I walked by it a few times, looked it up on Google Maps. Looked like an old, run-down place.
Popped in for a quick drink on a random nice afternoon…sure enough, owner is an old guy, there’s a group of 7 old guys singing in the booth next to me, and they barely speak a lick of English amongst the 8 of ‘em.
They are utterly perplexed what a foreigner like me is doing in here.
When I asked if they spoke English, they pretty much just laughed. I pointed at what I wanted. They held up the amount I was due to pay.
It was fun.
And this is what I mean by comfort zones.
Okay, the analogy of me here in a bar in a place that I call home in a region that I’m quite comfortable with is not exactly the right thing to compare to hiring and building/scaling a business.
But…
Just stick with me.
Because the little things add up over time.
You might be sitting, thinking, wondering, if it’s the right time to hire/bring on team members…
It probably makes you feel a bit uncomfortable.
Maybe you even start interviewing and are a bit perplexed like the old guys in the bar right now…
That’s the point though.
It’s out of the comfort zone.
Is me going to a country where I don’t speak the language and managing “uncomfortable” for me? I’m so used to it by now, it’s hard to say so, but it’s still something that is “uncomfortable”.
Like going to the gym.
Like doing things you don’t want to do in business and life.
Doing little things that make you uncomfortable but push you forward in life is what this is all about though.
And in business, you need to do that.
So even if you’re not sure if “it’s the right time” or any other number of excuses you might have for not starting a business or perhaps not taking the right moves to grow an existing business…
It’s all in your head.
Make yourself uncomfortable.
You might be surprised what you come up with.
