In the last thread we talked about Focal Points.

While knowing where to position our subject is important, the human eye is not a static tool. It moves and that movement needs to be guided and informed.

Vertical Lines lead the eye up and down.

These can inform a looming threat or powerful stature (more on these when we talk about angles)

Horizontal Lines lead the eye from left to right.

It can also express a tranquility or clarity to the scene.

Diagonal Lines are great for informing Depth.

They move both across and deeper into the frame, they can also grant a feeling of speed depending on the movement of the camera or subject.

Radial Lines can bring the eye into a specific space. This can be used to create both comfort and tightness.

Curved Lines occur more in nature but are still great at providing an organic element to the world around your subject.

This morning I wanted to share the start of a series about my journey in learning about photography from all angles. The first part will be training the eye to see the elements of compositions.

Points in photography are used to bring focus to the intended subject matter of an image, most typically when the subject is within a visually uncluttered space. Two guidelines of points exist within common cinema vocabulary: The Rule of Thirds and The Golden Triangle.

The Rule of Thirds

This divides the screen into proportional thirds forming a 3x3 grid where the points of interest lie at the intersections of the lines that form the grid shown by the dots.

A common balanced and safe guideline when using one to two subjects or objects.

The Golden Triangle

This first divides a frame in half diagonally then, from the other corners, lines form right angles creating points of interest at those intersections.

This demonstrates relationships between subjects with help from  camera angles and depth of field.
