Heavens Tools: Turbocharging the ENS Ecosystem. It's been a little over a year now and I want to share some insights and thoughts. More to come, but here is a general thread regarding the project.

The Timeless Journey of Self-Reflection

By integrating the limo-web3-dns-main library, @Microsoft could position Azure as a bridge between traditional internet infrastructure and blockchain technologies, here's an example of how Microsoft could use this new library to natively resolve #ENS domains across the Web. How?


Suppose Microsoft decides to integrate this @eth_limo limo-web3-dns-main library into its Azure Cloud services to offer native ENS (Ethereum Name Service) resolution for its customers, what benefits would be gained from this?

This would enable users to resolve .eth domains just like traditional domains but through the #Ethereum blockchain which unlocks a huge scope of utilities. Here's how this could work:


What does Microsoft or any major platform need to do to accomplish this? Well for Microsoft, simply adding this integration into Azure DNS!

Microsoft integrates the library into Azure DNS services, effectively turning Azure into an ENS-compatible DNS resolver.



User Configuration: Azure customers can opt-in for ENS resolution within their DNS settings. This enables the DNS resolver to handle .eth domains.



DNS Query Handling: When an Azure user tries to resolve a domain like testdomain.eth the query is initially handled by Azure DNS.


ENS Resolution Through the Library: Azure DNS uses the integrated limo-web3-dns-main library to interact with the Ethereum blockchain and resolve the ENS name.


Blockchain Query and Response: The library sends a query to the Ethereum blockchain to resolve testdomain.eth. It receives the corresponding Ethereum address, IPFS hash, or other records.



Conversion and Caching: The received data is converted into DNS-compatible formats. It could also be cached for faster future resolutions.



User Response: Azure DNS sends back the resolved information to the user's system, completing the resolution process.



What Business Applications Are Possible Through This:



Decentralized Web Hosting: Azure could offer decentralized web hosting solutions where users can point their ENS domains to IPFS hashes or other decentralized storage solutions.



Blockchain-based Identity Solutions: Azure Active Directory could integrate ENS names as a form of decentralized identity, offering an alternative to traditional email-based identities.


Data Integrity: ENS could be used as a form of verifiable data integrity within Azure's data storage solutions.



Native Support in Microsoft Products: Microsoft could extend this native ENS support to other products like Microsoft 365, allowing users to share files or send emails using ENS names.



Some Risks and Challenges:

Network Latency: Interactions with the Ethereum blockchain might introduce latency, although caching offchain could mitigate this.



Costs: Querying the Ethereum blockchain might incur costs that need to be addressed.

1/12 🌐 Today we dive deep into the engine room of the Ethereum Name Service (#ENS): which is the 'namehash' function.

ENS creates network directory for all of DeFi, turning cryptographic addresses & content into non duplicated human-readable names like 'satoshi.testdomain.eth'

2/12 🔐 At the core of ENS is the 'namehash' function, a tool designed not just to create identifiers, but to cryptographically secure and hierarchically structure domain names, making the decentralized domain journey more user-friendly, immutable, and safe for all who register!

3/12 🧪 Ok @DylanMeador - How does 'namehash' work?! Well, I'm glad you asked! It's a recursive function, working from the top-level domain and going deeper.

It uses the 'keccak256' hash function (the SHA-3 algorithm).

And to follow along, you'd need a library that implements 'keccak256' and 'namehash', such as ethers.js or web3.js. Shoutout to @ricmoo for that.

4/12 🎬 Let's start first with 'eth', aka '.eth' which is our top-level domain. We compute the 'keccak256' hash of 'eth', concatenate it with the 'namehash' of an empty name (32 bytes of zeros) and compute the 'keccak256' hash of the result. This gives us the 'namehash' of 'eth'.

5/12 🏗️ Building on this, we compute the 'namehash' for 'testdomain.eth'.

We hash 'testdomain' with 'keccak256', concatenate it with the 'namehash' of 'eth', and hash the result.

This produces the 'namehash' of 'testdomain.eth'.

Example:

return keccak256(namehash(remainder) + keccak256(label))

6/12 🚀 For 'satoshi.testdomain.eth', we hash 'satoshi' with 'keccak256', concatenate it with the 'namehash' of 'testdomain.eth', and hash the result. This gives us the 'namehash' of 'satoshi.testdomain.eth'

The Keccak256(data) function returns the keccak_256 digest of the encoded data.

The namehash(name) function recursively computes the namehash of a domain name using keccak256. When given an empty name, it returns '\0' * 32.

7/12 ⚙️ You can experiment with this in your local environment. Using a library like ethers.js, you'd do something like `ethers.utils.namehash('satoshi.testdomain.eth')` to compute the 'namehash'.

But amidst this rapid advancement, we must pause and reflect on the consequences of our relentless pursuit of technological innovation.

One of the greatest dangers lies in the dehumanization that accompanies the relentless march of technology. As we become more dependent on machines, we risk losing touch with our own humanity.
