“Victory favors the team making the fewest mistakes” -Bobby Knight 🏀🧵 My approach to FUNDAMENTALS
Specifically, the fundamentals I believe in: “On 2 Feet” Guarantee a solid/athletic base by requiring players to make plays on 2 feet ▪️When stopping a speed dribble, jump stop on 2 feet ▪️When receiving a pass, catch on 2 ▪️When collecting a rebound, land on 2
“Come Through the Ball” (to receive a pass) ❌ Meet the pass ✅ Go through the pass (to catch it on 2 feet 😉) Secures possession, and reduces the length of pass Promotes balance, and allows players to pick their pivot foot
Permanent Pivot Foot ✅ Reduces turnovers ✅ Keeps pivots consistent The left foot is the pivot foot for righties, and the right foot for lefties (does not apply to finishing footwork) youtu.be/9yMsQFPapQU
❌ One Handed Passes Outlaw them in your system (unless you’re coaching pros 😉) One handed passes can be sloppy One handed passes that appear open can become defended, but can’t be withdrawn
“Show a Target/Hit the Target” Demand pass receivers show a hand target + have your passers aim to hit the target Train passers to not throw to ball to player not showing a target while everyone learns This eliminates miscommunications
“Fake a Pass to Make a Pass” Especially from a stationary position with a defender close ✅ Opens passing windows ✅ Reduces tipped passes Tight high to low or low to high fakes
“Hip to Hip Pivoting” “Own your space” with this pivoting series that keeps the ball protected at all times while maintaining vision up the court youtu.be/hF6XdlhEX44
Fakes ✅ Pass ✅ Shot ✅ Foot ✅ Head ✅ Eyes Sell one thing, do the other
Get Open ✅ Change of pace ✅ Change of direction ❌ Rounded cuts ✅ V-Cut - to use speed to get open ✅ Pin and seal - to use strength to get open Then, “show a target”
Weak Side Cuts Allow for responsible freelance cutting options within your offense when: ▪️A cutter can cross his defenders face ▪️A cutter’s defender turns his head Then, “show a target”
Squaring Up Catch first, pivot to face the basket, then decide: ▪️ Shoot ▪️ Pass ▪️ Dribble The square up creates vision for opportunities
