5 communication inititives to grow your 🏀 program’s CULTURE #Culture102
1/ Thought for the Day
Share one simple quote, story, statistic, or parable players can relate to in order to make them think a little deeper and help you connect
2/ Eyes and Acknowledgment
In huddles, players lock in eye contact and should not be tying shoes, looking around or talking to their peer
It improves the retention rate of communication, and builds habits for when adversity hits
3/ Recognize Teachable Moments
Pay attention… Shaving a few minutes here or there off a practice plan to try to teach “life” to kids is more valuable than any basketball drill
4/ Rule: Players Don’t Talk to Officials
Players play, coaches coach, officials officiate
Coaches can advocate for calls if they want, but not players
The NBA sets the worst example for player/official interaction
5/ Conduct Exit Interviews
At the end of each season, debrief one-on-one with every player and assistant coach
This is an opportunity to set goals, talk about what’s going right and what’s going wrong
It promotes healthy communication
