Key learnings from the book Rework by @jasonfried A 🧵 for #startups and #smallbusiness @basecamp
Background: Large corporations enjoy delving into the minutiae of developing business plans, researching competitors, seeking investors, and so on.
@basecamp (previously 37signals), a software firm with no advertising budget, fewer employees, and salespeople, did the opposite and is thriving with a significant profit.
Today, it sells fewer things but earns more money than its competitors. Despite having less than sixty employees, the company made millions of dollars in profit each year.
Since @jasonfried advocates minimalism, believes in the beauty of simplicity and respects the simple and honest way, he applies these ideas to his business and its product development. Here are 4 minimalist business principles followed by @basecamp
1️⃣ Minimalism in business strategies The organization is extremely careful when it comes to hiring new employees and securing funds. It only recruits when it is absolutely necessary and avoids soliciting outside support.
Because of their modest size and low investment, they can operate at a low cost while being adaptable and flexible.
2️⃣ Minimalism in marketing strategies @basecamp deviates from standard marketing methods such as spending money on ads and press releases. Through experience and information sharing on blogs attract a large number of devoted followers at absolutely no cost.
3️⃣ Minimalism in product positioning @basecamp strives to keep its product features and design as simple as possible. They are not afraid to say no to customers who do not share their minimalist beliefs and insist on its product positioning.
4️⃣ Minimalism in corporate culture @basecamp has a five-hour workday and a four-day workweek in the summer. In terms of organizational structure, they do not have a "delegator" to allocate tasks to because they believe it is discouraging for the entire team.
Furthermore, they try to avoid meetings as much as possible. When meetings are unavoidable, they reduce the number of participants and the amount of time spent. Also, they address the real problems and ensure that they are resolved.
Conclusion: @basecamp challenges several traditional business assumptions and pioneers the "small and good-looking" mindset. Their experience is a wonderful resource for all types of business owners.
More importantly, they inspire those who want to start a business but are hesitant because of perceived challenges.
