Many companies ignore UX writing.

But UX copy can make the difference between sky-high churn or a 10/10 experience users share with their colleagues.

Here's how to do it well (with examples):

***

Our example:

You work on growth for an email marketing SaaS. You want to create an onboarding checklist (our example is a CommandBar questlist).

How do you make the UX copy work?

1. The header clarifies what this is about:

This is NOT sales copy where you want curiosity. It's UX writing where you want clarity.

2. User goal

Motivate users by reminding them of benefits they'll get by completing this.

Let's move into the steps:

***

1. What you'll need:

Knowing what to prepare enables users to successfully complete onboarding.

2. Specific CTA:

A specific verb clarifies what happens if they click there.

Next step? Next step!

Setting up a sending domain is laborious and annoying. Here, we need to increase motivation.

How? By telling users the benefit they'll get!

On to step 3:

Good UX writing also counters objections—think of all the "no credit card required" under free trial buttons.

Same here:

"It takes 2 minutes" counters the thought that this might take long. Even better: The templates and AI prove this is true.
