I say "new" but it's quite old actually.

I wrote it back in 2009. I was on a deadline, because the next day I was flying to LA to work with a producer and hopefully make a new album.

I was so scared/excited, that I wrote 5 songs that day! 😲



Long story short, nothing really happened with that collaboration. I went and recorded some demos, but came home empty handed.

Not everything was a waste of time, though. I really liked one of those songs, which I continued performing over the years every time I got the chance.

There's something special that happens when you perform a song live.

You really finish writing the song on stage.
Sometimes you improvise a little, and parts of it end up in the song, and other times you fail miserably.

This is part of a process.
Some songs need time. 🕰️

In 2013, years after I wrote the song, I decided it was time to record it.

I was playing a gig, and I got in the studio with the band the day after. We recorded two songs, and one of them was "Walk Your Own Way".

This time, the recording went great!

I can't explain why, but I never released this song.

Maybe I was too insecure, too afraid, or too much of a perfectionist.
Or maybe all of the above. 😅

The point is, I wish I did it then, but I'm doing it now. 💪

We did re-record/add some parts, but we kept the original vibe.

Some songs come out easily, and others go through a long process.

Long or short, the process is the reward.

Just the raw emotion of piano and voice. 🎹🎤

It has many mistakes and you can hear my voice shaking sometimes.

The song wasn't even finished then, but the feeling is there.





This was 10 years ago, and I had been writing songs almost every day, with no real purpose other than the joy of doing it while building skills. 🔨🪚

Usually, I would work on a song for a few days, make a demo and move on to the next one. ➡

This practice led me to incredible songwriting and composition opportunities.

But, inadvertently, I also built a catalog of music that remained unreleased for a long time.

It's my wish to share my journey with you, hoping my experience can be motivating for you.

This is what art and music is all about:
inspiring yourself and (hopefully) inspiring others too.

I truly believe that's our purpose in life.

We might be asking the wrong question here.

I think AI is making us reconsider WHY we do what we do.

The act itself is the reward.

We don't need any other validation.

Maybe we're not meant to compete with AI 🤖

I gotta be honest though;

I dislike the idea of "AI collaborations".

The notion that you can borrow someone else's artistic voice through AI, seems like a vane experiment to prove a point.

I don't think this is why we make art.

So then... WHY do we do this?

Why do we stay up late writing?

Why do we share our art with our friends?

Why do we hope for approval when we publish it?

...

Because we are human.

And we care about the human experience.

Humanity is what makes art stand out.

If AI is fast, we should be slow.

If AI is perfect, we should be spontaneous.

If AI is convenient, we should be compassionate.

Lean into your vulnerability.

Your art will become a home for others.

That's what makes you human.

My coworkers saw me quit my job.
My kids saw me feeling happier to be myself.

But most importantly...

I felt joy.

Fortunately, now my health is better and I'm still improving.

The unexpected side effect has been that I feel more inspired and centered.

I've been making music and I feel comfortable in my own skin.

Sure, I feel scared because I have big challenges ahead.

But also I feel ready and motivated to tackle them.

It really feels like learning everything all over again.

This experience has made me reflect on the artistic implications of streaming platforms.

Ignoring the fact that actually making money from streaming is nearly impossible, the biggest change I see is the format 💽

Format defines artistic expression, and it actually dictates the way music is experienced and created.

The album format used to be the standard for releasing music, and now it's less prevalent.

Now, if you record just one song you can simply upload it and see how it works out (which is basically what I'm doing).

There aren't many limitations these days.

On the other hand, the way music is consumed nowadays tends to be passive, like a background of our daily activities.

Active listening isn't the norm anymore.
I still remember getting together with friends just to listen to music 👴🏻

The format changed our consumption habits.

And the format has changed music too.

Popular music is now optimized for people's shorter attention spans.

You don't like a song? Next! ⏩

This isn't a limitation of the format itself, but more of a reflection of modern society.

But the format does enable this pattern.

Am I complaining? Nope.
(Well maybe a little 😅)

But I'm also looking forward to exploring this form of expression and being as creative as I can be.

As far as the financial aspect... that's a tougher conversation for later... 😬

For now, let's just worry about the music 🎵

My goal has always been to create a constant stream of music to release into the world (at which I've failed miserably so far).

But I don't give up easily, so here's another go at it! 💪💪💪

The first song I'm releasing was recorded 9 years ago in LA.

We tracked two songs in one night and they were pretty much finished, except for mixing and mastering.

But I never got around releasing this material, because I didn't think they were good enough.

This was right before my daughter was born so I had a lot on my mind and my priorities had drastically changed.

Coincidentally, these songs have become some of my daughter's favorites.
Maybe she remembers them from when she was in the womb?

Sometimes the hardest part about making art is accepting it for what it is.

This was certainly my case.

It took me almost a decade to appreciate what I had created and decide to share it.

I chose this track because it reminds me of a very important time in my life:
when I became a father.

Warning: this song isn't about fatherhood at all ❌

It's simply a story I came up with during that time, which I liked enough to turn into a song.

I call it the hollywood hero mindset 🎥

While this is common among young musicians, it's a toxic mentality that can be a source of anxiety and frustration.

I used to believe my music was more deserving than others;
that I had a unique sound that no one else could produce.

And I'm ashamed to admit I carried this belief into my adulthood.

Boy, was I wrong 🚫

It wasn't until I started collaborating with other musicians and experiencing different genres that I realized everyone has their own path to follow.

Every artist is pursuing their own destiny.

But I realized something else 💡

Music is always created within a specific context.
It doesn't exist in a void.

Our journey is what matters;
the stories we tell through our songs;
the emotions we capture with our melodies.

That's our real gift to the world 🌎

The beauty of music lies in its diversity.
What inspires me, may not inspire you, and that's ok.

What I know for sure, is that music always touches someone's heart.

And that's why music is always worth being created.

1) Unleash your creativity 🧠

It might be tempting to accommodate to a specific genre in order to fit in.
But we didn't get into music to follow all the rules, did we?

As artists, we should strive to showcase what makes us unique.

2) Music is a journey not a destination 🛫

Some people will try to box you in a specific style.

But being an artist is about constantly moving forward.

We evolve by pushing boundaries and reinventing ourselves.

Every step you take is part of your progress.

3) Storytelling beats genre ✍️

At the end of the day, the stories we're telling are the only thing that really matters.

No one cares if you're playing complex music or following the latest trend.

If your music is making your audience feel something, you're doing your job well.

4) Great music is timeless ⏳️

If you think of any music that has stood the test of time, you'll see that it transcends genre.

Because music is universal; genres aren't.

Remember, art is about being FREE.

Let's protect that freedom at all costs.

How can you deal with this uncertainty?

1. BUILD A ROUTINE

Creativity is an erratic and ambiguous process.

So a daily routine can give you the certainty you need to feel free.

You should check out the book "Daily Rituals: How Artists Work" by Mason Currey 🤓, where he describes daily habits of many creatives.

On a side note:

I believe this is why being a creative parent is so damn hard.

Raising kids requires a lot of "juggling around" every day.

(Or having a partner who is willing to do the heavy lifting, but where's the fun in that? 😝)

2. GOOD SLEEP

Your brain needs a good night sleep to function properly and perform your daily tasks, including creativity.

It keeps working while we sleep, making neural pathways that help us solve problems 🧠

This is why sometimes we wake up with "aha!" moments.

I've been doing what I call "music journaling".
I wake up one hour earlier, and record whatever comes to my mind.

It's highly liberating and rewarding.
I'll write more about it later.

Bottomline is, it only works after a solid 8-hour sleep 😴

3. TRAIN YOUR SKILLS

I see creativity as a highly performative endeavor ✅

It requires mastering a discipline that enables your creative vision. Otherwise, it just becomes a lost idea.

How could we create something if we're not able to at least communicate it?

When inspiration hits, you want to be in a place where you can recreate your idea seamlessly.

Then your performance should push your idea further and help it evolve into something bigger.

You must practice and train your skills to achieve exactly that.

4. SHOW UP!

Creativity is often triggered by work.

The only way to become great at anything is by practicing it every day.

A simple choice like scheduling daily songwriting sessions will drastically improve your musical output.

I promise you'll write many great songs 🎶

5. TAKE NOTES

Inevitably, you'll have ideas in random moments.

Always be ready to take notes (or voice notes) to document them.

I have hundreds of unused ideas, so when I feel stuck I just try something with them.

It's like writing letters to my future uninspired self 💌

I'm convinced that most people have untapped creative potential waiting to be developed.

But the only way to discover it is by actually trying.

Trust your guts and just go for it.

Writer's block is simply part of the process and we all should embrace it.

I get this question a lot.

My answer?

Just get an instrument and leave it there.
They'll get curious and eventually start having fun with it.

It really is that simple.

Now, before I get obliterated by an angry mob of purists 😅

While I encourage hiring a music teacher 🎼
this is not advice to turn your kid into a pro 🚫
but to develop a rewarding relationship with music 🎶

Having said that...
Let's dive in ➡️

1) They'll destroy the instrument

Get the best quality instrument that you're willing to get ruined.

Do teach them how to take care of it, but don't get too precious about it.

My kids have access to my piano, keyboards and guitars, as long as they're playful and respectful.

They don't really play music, but I let them come in the studio and experiment.

Yes, sometimes they drop them and it's PAINFUL to watch ☠️
but now they perceive music as a fun and safe space of expression.

That's my goal 🏁

2) They'll suck, for a long time

Unless you have a genius (which you probably don't), those music lessons are gonna be hard to justify for months or maybe even years 😅

If I learned anything after years of teaching kids, is that they advance at their own pace.

It's important to remember that the goal is to create an environment where they can be themselves.

In a world where everything is a competition,
let music be a space just for them 🍀

3) Let them experiment

Practicing is important.

But I truly believe the love for the instrument comes from experimentation.

I used to have an 8 year old student who was always bored during class.

One day I had to leave the classroom for a minute, and he started playing and really having fun with the piano.

From then on, we used part of the class to let him experiment and showcase his discoveries 💡

4) You're gonna have to get involved

Your job as a parent is assisting the teacher in keeping the student motivated.

How do you do that? By learning music yourself, along with them.

This isn't exclusive to music or arts.
You need to be able to speak the same language.

If your kid chooses guitar,
learn everything you can about guitars 🎸

• Types of guitars
• Types of strings
• Brands
• Guitar players
• Music genres
• Amplifiers
• Pedals
• Etc.

You can learn all of this for free on youtube.
Just put in the time.

GET INVOLVED

I could go on, but let's wrap it up with one last thought.

What if this isn't your kid?

Sometimes it feels as though we had forgotten what music is really about.

But we didn't forget, did we?

WE MISS IT.

We miss it every single day.

We miss finding the meaning of a song.

We miss feeling like it was written just for us.

We miss getting deeply inspired and making it our own.

So we certainly didn't forget.

WE NEED IT.

We need to connect with each other through music.

We need the anticipation of the next verse.

We need a window to our emotions.

We will always need it.

And I'm here to make sure that we never forget.

Now people are asking me, what the hell is THAT? 😂

Well, I'm figuring it out!

I've been writing these posts to organize my thoughts.
It's going well so far 😉

But I had a big realization

I'm not the only one with these thoughts 🔥

Everybody has a dream.

I'm getting messages from people telling me they just needed a little encouragement to keep pursuing their passion 🧡

So, in the spirit of sharing my journey, here are the values I defined for Mesmerable 💎

💡 Creativity first

We must protect creativity at all cost.

We're not machines. It takes a lot of time and effort to create something worthwhile.

Inspired work requires preparation and dedication.

Our ideas deserve a chance to flourish.

💡 Continuous creation

Music must be released constantly.

The goal is developing the habit of finishing a song and moving on to the next one.

Better released than perfect.

Let's see how that goes!

💡 Make collaborations

I wanna collaborate with different artists, from different backgrounds.

Something very special happens when a diverse group of people creates music.

Put two musicians together who don't speak the same language, and they will invariably make music.

💡 Continue sharing

So many people are longing for creativity.

These posts take time, but they're helpful, so I'll keep on writing them.

Hopefully, this will inspire you to record a song, make a painting, or write a poem...

There's someone out there 🌎 who needs your art.

Even in the face of financial havoc across the music industry, songs were never in short supply.

This industry has been running on pure passion. For decades.

Now things seem to be slowly getting a little better with streaming.

BUT

👇👇👇

1) It's a hard pill to swallow.

On one side, I'm grateful that we can leave behind the dominance of digital piracy.

But we're coming out on the other side to see an industry where music has no value.

2) Everything is massive

Nowadays, the game is in the big numbers. An artist would need MILLIONS of streams just to break even.

An impossible dream for niche genres.

This has the side effect of overcrowding the mainstream music space.

Which leads to my next point.

3) We're lacking music diversity

With the raise of home studios, I would expect to see more experimentation from artists.

Instead, we're getting the opposite.

I might just be an old fart 🧓🏻
but I think artists nowadays are more worried about trends than originality.

To be clear, I have nothing against any music genres.

My question is:
does everybody have to make exactly the same type of music?

It feels like the world is getting less artistic variety.

Technology was supposed to expand our creative horizons.

4) There's no sense of ownership

This one is hard to explain to younger generations, because people grew out of the feeling of "owning" music.

Remember when your music collection was part of who you are?

This greatly enhanced your experience as a music fan.

Streaming has destroyed ownership of music and this created a whole new set of problems.

There was a time when an artist could release music independently for a small audience and still be self sustainable.

You could just sell albums to your small audience and break even.

I was doing exactly that during the 2000s.
Investing in my music, promoting, and distributing it.

It wasn't enough to make a living, but it was enough to keep the ball rolling.

Those times are long gone.

BUT, maybe we have options!

There's been a lot of talk about music NFTs lately, and even though I still don't see the whole picture, I gotta say... I'm willing to listen.

Yes, this just turned into an NFT post! 😂

I'm almost done. Just bear with me for a bit 😇

I simply want you to be open to the conversation about music NFTs.

For starters, there seem to be artists making decent income in the space.

But more importantly, fans are starting to care about owning music again.

Given the current state of the music industry, why would we not at least consider it?

What is there anything to loose for artists?

We're supposed to push boundaries, not stay in our comfort zone.

To me, the slim chance that NFTs could change things for artists seems worth pursuing, and quite frankly, I don't really care what people think (the blessings of aging 😝).

Hopefully this will work out.
But if it doesn't, we'll just try something else.

I can only control the way I react to these situations.

This time I'm choosing to appreciate the fact that I'm focusing on the right priorities.

Admittedly, I'm being less productive than usual.

But life isn't supposed to be constantly amazing. It has ups and downs.

Sometimes things line up perfectly; some other times we stumble one step after the other.

So, whatever you're going through right now...

I'm rooting for you.

These are the challenges that are building our future self.

Let's be ok with that.

Everything's simple when we're young.

We spend thousands of hours practicing, creating, dreaming... with no other reward than recreating our inner world out in the universe.

But things gradually change...

No one tells you the biggest challenge of being an adult isn't paying the bills, but keeping your inner child alive.

Somewhere along the road we get obsessed with "success".
Always chasing money, fame, awards.

It's an anxiety-inducing race.

Why do we do this to ourselves? 😥

1) We only value what we can measure

It's easy to measure economic success. It's a number that translates into power and influence.

But what about satisfaction or peace of mind?

These are highly subjective feelings, but arguably way more important.

2) Belonging

Humans have a basic instinct of being part of a group.

Society rewards success with status and recognition 🏆

Furthermore, the arts are generally perceived as childish dreams that don't have a real place in a productive world 🏢

3) Education

We were taught that we should aspire to high grades, a degree, a good job, etcetera.

But rarely anyone tells you to spend time nurturing your creativity, or producing art that inspires others 💡

We now have the chance to be the adults we didn't have.

All these indicators of success are not equal to success.
They're just checkmarks on somebody else's to-do list.

You can have a high-paying job and suffer depression.

You can win awards and feel worthless.

You can be successful and unhappy.

Now, before everybody yells at me 😅, I'm aware that money is important.

I simply want to provide some counterweight to the narrative we've been taught.

And maybe even inspire you to take care of your inner-child 👼

If you lived with kids during the pandemic, you know how heartbreaking it was to see them outside; waiting for you to take some time and play with them.

Maybe this kid has been you. For years and years.

Luckily, it's not too late.

The biggest one has been not releasing my music frequently.

I've been making music for other people. But mine is sitting on my hard drive, waiting for the perfect moment to be released 🤦🏻‍♂️

Now, why am I telling you this?

1) Accountability

Starting today, I make myself accountable for my creative output. No one else.

No more "I'm researching things" or "adulting is hard" or whatever excuse.

The perfect timing is now.

I hereby publicly commit to release my music through whatever means available to me at the moment.

Do you have half-baked songs?
An unfinished painting?
An incomplete story?

Join me on the ride.
Let's take care of our inner artist.

One piece at a time.

2) Sharing knowledge

I'm sure there must be someone out there in a similar situation.

If I share my process maybe you'll learn from my wins and losses, and feel motivated to release your own art.

Inspiring one person is enough to keep me going.

3) Learn from you

Looking back to my career, I have plenty to be proud of. And I certainly feel wiser than when I started.

But I also realize I still have a lot to learn. Maybe you have valuable insight for me. I'm eager to listen!

Let's build each other up!

4) The system is killing music

Spotify released some upsetting stats.

67.50% of all artists on the platform have released 10 or less tracks. Barely an album.

That's a concerning majority.

So let's make a deal you and I.
Let's not be part of that group!
