When discussing accuracy with irons or center-faced driver/wood contact, we are really looking at 2 variables
✅Path
✅Face
The face is king
It controls around 75% of the start direction. So even if you swing the club 15 degrees in-to-out (right), if that face is 6 deg closed (to the target) the ball is starting left.
Generally, I recommend changing the face first until you get a result that is on target
The rule is pretty simple
🟣If you need your shot to finish more right, get the face more open*
🟣if you need your shot to finish more left, get your face more closed*
*at impact
Path refers to the direction the club is moving through impact. Here's an example of an out-to-in or left path (for right hander)
Path has a smaller influence on the start direction (around 25%) compared to face (75%).
While people obsess over path, you can actually play pretty good golf with a path that is some amount offline, although I haven't seen many really good players in double digits (10 deg +)
You can learn what your path is in 3 ways
🟣launch monitor (best way) that measures it
🟣your non-curving shot direction
🟣which direction your on-line shots curved
let's look at the last 2
If you hit a shot with no curve to it (or very minimal) with an iron, the direction it went is a reasonable approximation of your path direction.
A non-curving shot has a square face to path, so we know that's your path direction.
E.g. path 10 left, face 10 left = ball 10 left
If your on-target shots curved to get there, the rule is simple
🟣if it curved left, your path is right
🟣if it curved right, your path is left
the more it curved, the more extreme your path is.
So my general rules for making changes are
✅if shot is off-line, change the face
✅if the shot is on-line but curved too much, change path
this will get you TOWARDS neutral without needing to be perfectly neutral, without the need for an expensive launch monitor.
If you want to learn how to improve
🟣path direction
🟣face direction
🟣consistency/control over both
🟣ability to shape shots when needed
🟣better course directional-strategy
