I had a 24-hour break-up with the internet. Here is what actually happened: 🧵
Internet and social media allow us to connect with people with similar interests but simultaneously disconnect us from ourselves!
I have been heavy user of internet and social media, it would not be wrong to say that I am addactive to these things. I found myself incapable of reading books, academic study or having long uninterrupted conversations.
When I looked at my screen time statistics, it showed me that I had spent 7 hours and 52 minutes on my phone that day, and it was for phones only excluding computers.
I became angry, worried, and sometimes quite messy when using the internet, especially social media. I experimented with a number of methods to reduce my consumption, like deleting Whatsapp and Twitter every night, putting my phone in flight mode, and turning off computers.
To connect with thyself, sometimes, it becomes necessary to disconnect from distraction; in this case for me, it was internet, social media and digital screens.
Usually, the very first thing I do in the morning, is pick up my phone and check out WhatsApp and Twitter.
But this morning was different since I had a "24-hour break-up with the internet," so I did nothing just lay in bed for a short while. Literally, putting off the cellphone in the morning was extremely difficult.
When I gave up the connectivity I started to regain my focus, the first few hours or even days are tough. But the rewards are worth it.
I had always been thinking of doing morning walks and doing nothing in nature for a long time, so that morning I did exactly that. And in the end, I felt more motivated, less stressed and more energized all at the same time.
I had keep my day busy with my friends and family, visited some places I had been thinking of doing for a long time. "Having long conversations with your loved ones is good for your mental health" And, It was indeed.
I wasn’t scrolling Twitter. But instead, I was reading fictions. And, the most healthy one, I fell asleep at 10 p.m. It conveyed me to "The 5 AM Club"
The point isn’t to get you off the internet, or even off social media, i am still allow myself to use LinkedIn, Twitter and other social platforms on a desktop or laptop, and there’s no hard-and-fast time limit.
