When Apps Become Verbs (and Metaphors)

Why do some apps become metaphors for entirely new categories? First it was “Uber for…” Then “Tinder for…” Now it’s “Cursor for…” What’s next?
There’s a pattern here. Certain apps hit critical mass and introduce a new UX or market model. Other builders then remix that concept in new verticals.
“Uber for…” = logistics meets on-demand. “Tinder for…” = discovery via swipe. “Cursor for…” = AI-native dev tools with multiplayer baked in.
These aren’t just features — they’re mental models. They become frameworks others copy or build on.
What will be the next app to cross that threshold? “Notion for…”? “Replit for…”? “TikTok for…”? Drop your bets.
