How cryptocurrency triggered Hamas' terror attack on Israel.
According to BitOK, a cryptanalytics and software company based in Tel Aviv, Hamas received $41 million (€39 million) between August 2021 and June 2023.
According to London-based cryptocurrency researcher Elliptic, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), whose fighters joined Hamas in carrying out the attack, received another $93 million in cryptocurrency.
According to Elliptic's analysis, the al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas' military wing, also received millions of dollars in cryptocurrency transfers.
These transfers were in the form of bitcoins, stablecoins and other cryptoassets, including dogecoin, a cryptocurrency popularized by Ilon Musk and originally coined as a joke.
According to Elliptic , some of these groups are even mining cryptocurrencies, allowing them to make more money from basic maintenance of cryptocurrency networks.
Under Hamas rule, Gaza has experienced serious economic isolation from many countries. Blockades with neighbors Israel and Egypt have restricted the movement of goods and people.
Even despite these restrictions, the American magazine Forbes named Hamas one of the richest terrorist groups in the world in 2014, when their annual turnover was estimated at $1 billion dollars. This came from taxes and fees, as well as financial aid and donations.
Most of Hamas' funding comes from expatriates or private donors from the Gulf region.
